I got on the list for the free upgrade from 8... awaiting rollout... Do you have any idea if it's an easy computer transition, or will there be much hands on crap involved?

you basically just click update when it offers it to you and go to bed. it takes a while and your computer restarts a bunch of times.

That's cool... The way they worded the option though was like by agreeing they would do it in the background -- as they do with revision Updates which I'm rarely aware of unless it is causing my PC to run a tad out of kilter/slower -- automatically... when it is available to me... What I was concerned with though was if there might have been options I had to occasionally address, OR possibly problems with the Upgrade.

So glad it is just a matter of time it takes... and come to think of it, I do remember past occasions of their downloads where there were repeated restarts... Might have been a past major Upgrade.

if you doing it during the day and not going to bed like i did it might be a good idea to check on it every once in a while. there can be hangups like watson posted a picture of a "something happened" screen. but i think in most cases it just takes care of everything with no issues. mine went right through with no hangup going from 8 to 10.

i am interested to see if the other computer gives me any poop going from 7 to 10 whenever it finally gets around to offering me the update on that one.

Yeah, Watson's post is what caused me some concern... I usually do it while awake and periodically check up on it... I get a bit impatient and nosy also.

if you don't want to wait for the upgrade automatically you can manually download a tool and run it to start the upgrade/

I thought it had to be purchased unless you have Windows 8 and were receiving the FREE Upgrade... which was backlogged and was being rolled out in waves due to high demand. I assumed that they would first take care of the sales as that was Revenue... There is a too to use to download the Free Upgrade they promised? I'm surprised.

I'm not in a hurry though... and I suppose the longer it takes for me to get it, the more bugs will be corrected.

Its free for non-enterprise editions of Windows 7 and 8. (Just make sure you are patched to the latest, SP1 and 8.1 respectively)

There is a queue / waitlist for eligibility to upgrade via the Windows Update method - so for those eligible, it can be bypassed by this tool:
