Very few people drafted where Gerbe was taken ever make the NHL. He might not be your favorite but at his best he was at least "solid". - Slump Buster
Agreed.
Now I kind of what to go back and look at the rest of the players drafted in the 5th round that year to see if anyone else has had any NHL success.
Not every guy you draft needs to turn into a superstar, but to have them contributing in the NHL in some way helps. You can't expect all these guys to tear it up every night. Especially the ones in the later rounds. It's why I keep telling people that their expectations for Foligno are way out of whack. He was a 4th round pick. And I don't want to hear "Well, Datsyuk was drafted even later in his draft year" because that is a rare type of occurrence.
EDIT: Went back and looked at the 05 5th round. The only other player who's name I recognize on the list is Darren Helm, who was drafted 10 spots higher. |

he played in pre season and 1 year in the AHL what did he earn ?
Teams should be calling him to come back to the NHL but he obviously loves his home more

The Sabres blew it by giving up a 2 goal lead at home. They lost that series by losing game 6, regardless of whether that Connolly hit happens or not. - buffalofan19
disagree...Connolly was having a great series in a defensive/pk role and that hit changed the game and the momentum of the series |

Some players can't handle being that far from home. It's part of why taking Euros/Russians is so risky. Think about how crazy you get being across the country at times. Can you imagine how you'd feel if you were on a whole different continent? |

Seriously, Michael's blog here is exactly why Darcy needed to go! Shear odds alone would have had you drafting at least one decent NHL player per draft, and this guy managed to blow every pick. I mean if you would have put all the names of draft eligible players on a dart board and just thrown darts to make your picks, you would have done a better job at drafting then Darcy did. Yes, player development was also a problem, but WHO was in charge of hiring the coaches? That's right, Darcy was.
And please don't tell me Gerbe turned out to be a solid player, the guys a gnat. I don't want to hear about how he has all the heart of Rudy, he's a joke. - sskkoo1
he actually defied the odds and is a regular nhl player who's on the second year of a two-year/one-way contract...he scored 15 goals last season...not sure what y'all want out of him |

Don't forget they also lost Pominville to a severe leg laceration in that series as well. Those two being out created a huge hole.
My issue with that series is the fact that the team came out for Game 7 and laid a total and complete egg. They might as well have not even gotten off the bus. |

forgot about that...the flyers had a good team that year...much better than the sabres, but the sabres had the momentum heading into the playoffs and almost pulled off an upset.
the Connolly point is simply that they just might have pulled it off had he not been taken out by richards |

In that draft, from Round 2 to the end, only 13 players (6 were round 2 guys, and 1 of those Round 2 guys only has 1 point more) have more points than Gerbe has earned in the NHL. That is 200 players drafted (including thunderpunch himself).

Maybe you're right. Maybe I am being a little too hard on him. I will give him credit for his tenacity. I wish a lot of NHL players had the drive he has. It's just... Gerbe has always reminded me of that kid in the neighborhood. You know the one who is about ten-years-old and takes roughly one months worth of karate lessons and then goes around thinking he can beat the holly hell out everybody, even adults three times his size. When I watch Gerbe playing hockey I'm reminded of that annoying kid.

I'm not surprised. I never had an issue with Gerbe. He goes out every game and busts his ass. It's just that some fans don't appreciate the role players the same way that others do.
A Stanley Cup winning team isn't comprised of all superstars. You need to have the guys that are willing to take a beating each game and continue to move forward even when things seem impossible. That's the kind of guy Gerbe is. The fact that he does actually have a bit of skill to go along with his tenacity is a bonus.
He's never going to get you a ton of points each year, but he's not getting you killed out there either. I'm glad he's been able to find some success since they cut him loose here. |

nice work...even I forgot about that one, and if not mistaken, i'm the one that coined it - Michael Pachla
My memory is not so good to remember that part of it, but it was definitely a nickname I picked up from the boards (and know it was definitely not my own creation). |
