Oh, I have no idea obviously. The deterrent may come from, say, losing his license, having to explain this every time he needs to cross the border, embarrassing news cycles, and so on. If the league saw fit to suspend him a few games on top, they'd be within their rights.

I don't like American football all that much, but I respect the hell out of the league's effort to present a positive image. If an NFL player had an incident like ROR, they'd be suspended without pay 1/4 of the season. No doubt about it.

Not good if police come to you to talk, 4 days go by then you're asked to come down to the police station.

They will wait and let the legal system do what it needs to do first.

For sure, that should go without saying. But let's say this is true, He would have court appearances over the next few months. Would he be allowed to play between court dates? Going off how the Voynov case was handled it would seem unlikely.

I think the Voynov situation would suggest absolutely not.

So the news is now how the news is being reported?

Hopefully the truth comes out for all those involved.

In the COURT'S opinion he may be allowed to participate in team activities. Sounds more like a team and league decision.

I don't disagree with the notion of waiting for the facts to come out before forming an opinion or discussing the story, but I find it extremely interesting and ironic because the complete opposite happened in the case of Joe Paterno with the Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State. Everyone and their brother, including many people here most likely, rushed to judgment in that situation. But now that it's hockey player Patrick Kane who allegedly is involved, we're going to wait for all the facts before forming an opinion or tarnishing his "pristine" reputation? Seems pretty ironic.

Allegedly is a term that will be used in an investigation, indictment and if charges are brought and used right up to a verdict in a court of law if one is made. Whether or not there is an investigation time will tell and given that if charges are made or if this is a non- story.as a journalist I would have thought you understood that point.

DUI and leaving the scene, no way. General DUI suspensions are 4 games. Sometimes appealed down to 2 games but with the extras involved (hitting the Horton's and leaving the scene) he'd get 4 games.

I understand what you are doing here. And to some extent, I respect it. However, allegations of this sort are the wrong time to do so. Stand up for Mike Richards and his job-related drug problems, please. Please don't play the "innocent until proven guilty" card, it's a farce. Finally, allegations like this should always be taken with the utmost seriousness. Yeah, it's nice to trot out the UVA thing. However, most sexual assaults go unreported, and most that are reported are either not taken seriously OR not prosecuted for one reason or another. Sexual assault is not a new problem - it's not only a problem for athletes either - it is part of the basic and underlying oppression of women in our society. An oppression that is made possible by centuries of the cards being stacked against them.

Like I said, I get what you are trying to do here, but choose your moments to stand up for the athlete more carefully.

To be fair , we only know that he's under investigation , I think what ek is trying to say , is that when names and facts start to come out, then we can formulate are own opinion , and not wait on the legal process.

"I do not know the facts or the people involved and I believe when a person's entire reputation, family and future is on the line, reporting any "scoop" or news regarding such an incident is NOT a rumor. It is gossip. We don't do gossip"

So i have one issue with this. Aside from the reputation being tarnished, you are condemning gossip.

So when trade rumors are posted here, which you claim are from sources that you never provide proof of, you don't think you are affecting players??? Many players have families and the idea that you would have to uproot them to move to another city is stressful. Players are concerned they are going to be moved, which can affect their on-ice play and you also have to worry about your kids having to leave all their friends behind.

If it is irresponsible to comment on criminal allegations, it is irresponsible to report trade rumors.

If a legit source like TSN will report about it, then i there could be something to it. You reporting about trade rumors IS gossip. It's funny where people draw the line.

You want ppl to pay for your ssn pass so they can hear about your trade gossip that can affect people's lives, but don't comment on stuff being reported by major reliable sports sources???

Fair enough, this is all speculative and as Ek said it's never good to perpetuate these kind of rumours until the facts are there. Just trying to get a handle on how the league would deal with this. As many have said if this is true it is a very serious matter and in the age of social media it's that much easier for a story like this to snowball. I hope whatever the outcome is, will reflect nothing but the facts, then let the legal system handle it accordingly.

The new substance abuse program would impose a one-game suspension for a first-offense DUI. The penalty also would include a fine in the amount of one game check. with all the extras we are looking at 2 games for ROR if he was a NFLer

1) What does one have to do with the other

2) Paterno, at the very least, failed to act responsibly despite knowing at least part of what was happening. I am of the opinion he knew far more and actively looked the other way to avoid having the story get out, but that's just my opinion.

3) Even if Paterno were completely innocent and the media did completely skewer him irresponsibly...why can't they learn from their mistakes and fix them during the course of other major news stories like, potentially, this one.

The entire notion that because one situation was (according to you, anyway) mishandled, another one can't be handled more appropriately is absolutely insane.

I don't know about that. Jared Allen got two games for two DUI's. Stallworth killed someone and was suspended for only one season. Don't know if they would suspend someone 4 games for bumping a coffee shop and leaving. This thread isn't even about that by the way.

Well yes, obviously that too. But I am saying if found to be innocent, there is already enough out there that Kanes rep has taken a nose dive.
