So nobody ever believed Oilver Lauirdsen was going to take Grossmann's place? Nobody ever believed Brandon Manning is better than Luke Schenn? Nobody believes right now that Radko Gudas will undoubtedly be the end of Luke Schenn?
I guess Flyers fans never get carried away. I'm telling you, there was an expectation of Luke he was never going to reach when he got here. - SuperSchennBros
Well I can honestly say I was not one who had high hopes for Luke.
Can't beat a dead horse. We lost that trade time to move on.
I just want to see if Gudas and Manning can at least play to the level of Luke during camp If they can.. Goodbye Luke . I will take the better value |

Yeah, Gudas is gonna take some ppl by surprise.
IMO, the big advantage he has is that despite his various limitations, he's a set-it-and-forget-it type of player -- something that coaches love. - Tomahawk
I'm encouraged by the stuff I have seen and read. Not expecting a legit top 4 guy to step in and be rock solid, but as a physical third pair guy, making less than $1mm, there's nothing there to dislike.
Maybe he can be as good as what Schenn and Grossmann bring or brought to the mix, maybe he can't. I just don't expect some massive dropoff from that level of play, and the cap hit is far easier to absorb.

Only think I'd add is maybe the Flyers lost the trade, but not to the level it's made out to be. JVR is highly overrated as a player in my opinion. I still like the reasoning behind making the trade, it just hasn't worked out as hoped.

There was a lot of hope Luke would put it together here and become a solid top 4 defenseman, although few of us thought he'd end up being Adam Foote, which was his draft hype. That's natural to see after your team pays such a high price to acquire a player.
He's been OK, struggled some, had some good stretches. He's pretty much plateaued as a physical 4-5 guy who can make a good outlet pass and provide some grit and nastiness on the back end. I have no issue if he stays, or goes. I just think that Gudas can probably replace what he brings for $2.5mm less this season.
I do have concerns if they were to deal away Schenn that the blueline would be a bit soft. In the case of a Schenn deal, the return would be paramount, rather than a case of just needing to be rid of a contract or player. |

I also saw Adam Foote in him but the names Shea Weber, Scott Stevens and Adam Foote all came up. At least you own your original thoughts. I just don't want to get my hopes too high for Gudas.

I don't recall anyone saying he'd be Weber or Stevens...Expecting or hoping Gudas can maybe be a competent 4-5 defenseman isn't setting a real high bar. |

At the time Schenn was drafted people dubbed him "The next Adam Foote," but I would have thought that being one of the last times that comparison happened. I would have been thrilled if he was even a top 4 dman because in the end he's all we have to show for the season in which we should not speak of |

I think perception of Luke Schenn is a bit shaded by who he was traded for.
Schenn has become a solid 4-5 defenseman. There's nothing wrong with that and he's not massively overpaid for his role or skill-maybe slightly, but not massively.
The trouble is, whether JvR is overrated or not, they should have gotten a better return. Since the trade was made, only 15 players in the NHL have more goals than van Riemsdyk. The guy isn't Jonathon Toews or Ryan Getzlaf, but he's pretty damned good.

People forget that he was widely inconsistent and would score his goals in bunches than fade for 10-15 game stretches. He was impressive early during our playoff run but he never turned that into consistency. I don't like the trade for schenn though again trading him for a legit top 4 young d man would of been the right and great move. Say it was a shattenkirk we got back for him and everyone would never bring up the name jvr again.
To gudas point when we originally envisioned our top 6 prior to the Medvedev signing I posted I think manning and gudas would split time as the 6th man barring any additions. Gudas would play verse the mote physical teams and manning the quicker ones. I still think that.. If morin is ready next year and schenn does not become a consistent player they'd feel more comfortable bringing morin as the physical presence in the top 4 and gudas as a bottom pairing guy. Strictly for the salary alone and not any other reason. I'm hoping his friendship with jake will maybe rub off and allow jake to influence him to be a more responsible player. Than he'd add real value ad a cheap 6/7 guy. |

IIRC, the mood was pretty dire when that trade went down and we found out it was 1-for-1.
I can tell you that I was one of the more optimistic people on here about Luke, but Shea Weber? Lol, common. - Tomahawk
Hated it from day 1. Top liner gone for a bargain bin level dman |

Just giving you the vibe of the room the offseason that Luke Schenn landed here.
Luke Schenn the next big thing when he got here. Radko Gudas, Oliver Lauirdsen and Brandon Manning the next big things to replace him.
Somehow this sounds stupid to nobody. - SuperSchennBros
eh nobody in here was saying anything remotely close to that. if anything as tomahawk said it was dire... i think that trade was my last hurrah in the amen corner |

Absolutely, had they gotten a guy like Shattenkirk, I'd be all for dealing a guy like JvR.
Unfortunately, they didn't. |

Biggest concern with him is disciplined play. He likes to hit. A lot. That's not bad, but it can also leads to positioning issues and blown coverages. The other concern is Gudas takes a lot of obstruction penalties.
Sounds like Denis Gauthier |
