question for you Philly-ans. how far is the ballpark from heart of downtown Philly and is it easy to get there and back?

The Broad Street line to and from the stadium. Shampoo simple. You'll be fine.

Just turned 33 in mid July. I don't even live in Philly. I'm a black kid living in Detroit and originally from Canada.

I never saw Bob Clarke play but I met him on the night in Toronto before Mike Richards was able to score his first short handed goal while being two men down on Eddie Belfour.

I'm at Wayne Gretzky's restaurant with my back turned to the door, while facing a Toronto radio show. My buddy across from me points behind me and says"Hey look, it's your buddy!" I turn behind me expecting to see an ugly woman or a handicapped child and walking towards me is Bobby Clarke. I smack him in his mid section and put out my hand for a hand shake, which he shook. It wasn't until I turned around to realize how star struck I was. The first Flyer I ever met.

Paul Coffey and Eric Lindros are the reasons why I'm a Flyers fan. I followed Coffey here from Detroit.

Great, great blog, Bill!

I'm roughly your age and it brought back some memories. I confess, I never did like those orange street hockey pucks. They were tough to play with. But most, if not all, kids in my neighborhood had those mylec sticks you described.

Ultimately, I agree with your assessment of Clarke the GM. I think his philosophy about team bled over to his opinion of goaltending, insofar as he seemed to believe that the goaltender was just another cog on the team and should not be regarded as special. I'm not sure how he came about this, considering he must know that those mid-70's teams don't win the Cup without Bernie Parent.

I think the shenanigans with Lindros was two-sided. I never believed Clarke was solely to blame. It takes two to tango.

One move that I feel like actually set the franchise back a bit during that mid to late 90's era was the nonsense with Chris Gratton. Gratton filled no need for the Flyers at all. I don't know if he brought Gratton in to have another big center in case Lindros walked or something, but it was frustrating to watch Gratton play out of position or supplant Brind'Amour when he wasn't as good as Brind'Amour. The resources used to acquire Gratton could have easily been spent on other things, such as defense or goaltending; both of which were needed on those teams.

no doubt. Great on BC and great on childhood sports idolizing.
What makes it even better for me is that I have a 10yrold son and the way Bill writes he can both take me back to what it was like to be 10 and how my son views the world now.

It's about 6-7 miles.

The subway will take you from center city right to the stadium. Always the easiest way. Just don't wear an opposing teams poop on it. I doubt anyone really (frank)s with you, but it's not worth the risk. I wish I were kidding.

- PhillySportsGuy

It's actually less than that. It's only about 4 miles.
