Looking at the top 6 forwards, what kind of offensive production do you think is needed out of each of the 6 forwards to be a good team? - MJL
I'm tied up at work right now, but it's a very good question and I'd like to pick this up later, if that's ok? |

Just thinking of something, but aren't Manning and Schenn both 25? So if people think Manning can keep developing how comes Schenn can't? - J35Bacher
I think the argument is more about finality. If you play guys like Gus, Akeson and Manning for an extended period of time, you can definitively say whether they belong or not.
No one is saying any of them will work out. We're saying they should be given an opportunity especially when the incumbents aren't particularly good or part of the future.
I'm not really a Manning guy. I just hate seeing veterans on a bad-mediocre team continue to play when you have an opportunity to find out about other players in the system. |

He's played a grand total of 21 games over 3 years, which some people think is enough to determine that he's an everyday NHL defenseman. To me, he hasn't done enough or played enough to warrant that. He hasn't exactly played badly, but he hasn't done anything to show me that he brings something to the NHL more than other 7/8 defenders like the guys you've mentioned.
Part of the issue is that the Flyers have had a full lineup of "veterans" in front of him during his tenure here. And now with guys like Ghost/Hagg/Morin and even Alt in the picture, those prospects may be ahead of him. To me, he has to stake a claim to a job during this training camp and make it impossible for them to send him down if he wants a full-time job. Otherwise, he'll likely be a very good AHL defenseman for the bulk of his career. - jmatchett383
I just always hate when people bring up this "get a shot" thing. Why do you think players like Gustaffson and Slaney and Syvret never became full time NHLers. Also how about all the other teams that have similar guys.
Yes there will always be exceptions or late bloomers, but if guys have NHL skills they will get roster spots.
I may be in the majority but i would rather have Schenn playing then Manning if it was my choice. He is young enough that if he can become more consistant he can still be a part of the future. Schenn could be a nice stay at home guy for a rover like Gostisberhere in the future. Also he has size and can kill penalties. |

Well, that's really Hextall's call. He can't set the lineup, but he can set the roster. I think that Gustafsson should have been given more of a chance as a #6 and that Akeson got a raw deal in his usage this past season. Manning hasn't really shown me anything to say he belongs. |

I think he signed Carlo because he didn't want to use Ghost or Hagg and the other AHL options were weak. I think Manning and Alt were hurt at the time |

ok. then why wasn't manning inserted when healthy if indeed he was hurt? forget the other 3 as talking about manning. |

The guys you mentioned aren't especially young. You don't think if they gave something more then the vetrans in front of them, the flyers wouldn't make a spot. I think those 3 are what they are and the Flyers probably have a good idea what they bring. |

I agree. For a guy like Manning, you have to find a niche. Every team has 2-3 guys like him who are good AHL players who are fine as NHL callups. He's nothing special, or at least hasn't shown me that in his brief time up. |

correct and if they belonged in the nhl on an everyday basis they would be. either here or somewhere else. |

I'm just curious as to why they re-signed Schutlz. I felt they could have sold high on him and had Manning fill in as the #7 this season. I know Hexy felt he got good value, but he is just another 3rd pairing guy. |

And they moved Grossmann.
Schultz is a good vet who if someone like morin or Provorov make the team you can pair him with. Not flashy, just steady.
Also the contract is easily moveable if needed. Either during camp if another injury hapens somewhere or at the TDL if a good offer comes up. |

Just not sure why Umberger and VL were options but Akeson wasn't. He played well in the playoffs and was a point per game player at LHV. Thought he deserved a shot on a team that needed a skill set like his. Particularly on that second PP unit.
Even if you feel confident in something, you still don't know for sure until you give the player a chance. That's mainly my point. |

I'm not gonna argue that one. Schultz didn't really show me much other than to not be a complete (frank)-up, which is why he looked like one of our best defensemen. He also seemed to take a nose dive late in the season. I feel that the step from Schultz to Manning is incredibly small. |

I just hate when people claim a guy needs a shot. If a guy has NHL shills and attributes he will get an NHL spot.
I was never an Akeson fan. I know he had skill but I think he was slower then Couturier and was small. If your going to be small you better be able to fly. Also I think they have someone like that now in Martel. Small, skilled but he can absolutely fly though. Also I think he plays a more edgy game where he can be effective on the PK and bottom 6 if he makes the NHL someday. |

I think they think more highly of Schultz than as just a 3rd pairing guy. I think they like him in a "Jason Smith in 2008" kind of way. |
