At least the Flyers have done their damndest to compete throughout franchise and have not tanked -- in two different eras -- with little to no pretense of trying to win hockey games. Nor has their ownership relied on outside funding to keep them afloat.
That's more than can be said for a certain western PA franchise. - bmeltzer

Bill, you touched on Martel having an overage season and doing very well and all, but that it needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
With that being said, dont you think the impact of him being an overager is a bit less significant given his size? Most players at 19-20 are considered to have an unfair advantage because of physical maturity... wouldnt his size (or lack thereof) really keep it more competitive (relatively) compared to a guy like Morin or Goulbourne? |

Akeson was also an overage CHL scoring champion. At 5'10, 190 lb, he's not exactly some gargantuan dynamo either. Bigger than Martel, but still average-sized at best. So, what do you think of Akeson? |

Martel was also nearly a PPG player before really exploding last season. He didn't look out of place in the AHL last season, either. Hard to be upset when a team rolls the dice on a skill guy |

If he on an ELC or an AHL-only contract? |

Pretty sure it's a full on ELC. I think Kevin Gumas is on an AHL deal |

"Have YOU ever seen the Flyers, the Buffalo Bills of the NHL, WIN the Stanley Cup ? Not ALMOST, but actually win it ? If so, go take your Geritol, it's almost bedtime."
Fun fact: The Bills never won. The Flyers have won. Twice actually. So the Flyers are the Atlanta Braves of the 90's. |

I think the only thing they have in common is that they both are under-sized, although Akeson really isnt all that small compared to Martel.
Akeson is a guy who I think could be effective ONLY if he is placed with guys who would help his skill set. He isnt the best skater, but he does have pro level skills. We saw glimpses of what he was capable of, and glimpses of why he doesnt seem to be in the future plans.
I think Martel is a big different. Martel is much more undersized, but his skating is fantastic... probably his best trait. Because he is so dynamic in that regard, the size issue isnt as bad. Now if he had his size and Akesons skating, he wouldnt sniff the NHL.
Martel also is a bit of a fiery guy. He plays a very full 200 foot game and is a bit pesky as well. I am seriously hoping we found a Brendan Gallagher type player in him. |

Akeson always struck me as a guy who wasn't willing to put that extra effort and with the effort he did put in, he thought he automatically deserved a spot. He played well in that Rangers series, but i think he got too comfortable with that short run that he expected a roster spot for sure. Akeson started to get out worked on the boards very easily and would just look like he would give up on plays. |

I saw the same things. I just don't think Akeson is an NHL player. He's not good enough offensively to play on a scoring line. His play away from the puck, and other elements of his game aren't good enough to be a bottom 6 forward. |

You, Bill, and all of the other "experienced" posters of this site:
If the Flyers had a healthy Dailey, do you think the 85 or 87 Finals turn out differently? - jmatchett383
Really hard to say, in 85, they were clearly outclassed by Edmonton and the loss of Lindbergh to injury, along with some other key players, really left them with no chance.
By 87, Dailey would have been 33, so who knows how effective he still would have been. You also have to wonder, would they have traded for K. Samuelsson that fall if Dailey had still been on the roster, or made the move to pick up Daigneault who scored that huge goal in game 6? Either way, there is just no way to guess what would have happened.

BLOOD ALONE MOVES THE WHEELS OF HISTORY! Have you ever asked yourselves in an hour of meditation - which everyone finds during the day - how long we have been striving for greatness? Not only the years we've been at war - the war of hockeybuzz - but from the moment as a child, when we realize the world could be conquered. It has been a lifetime struggle, a never-ending fight, I say to you and you will understand that it is a privilege to fight. WE ARE WARRIORS! Posters of north-eastern Pennsylvania, I ask you once more rise and be worthy of this historical hour. No revolution is worth anything unless it can defend itself. Some people will tell you poster is a bad word. They'll conjure up images of people early 90s Michael Jordan, and door to door charlatans. This is our duty to change their perception. I say, posters and women of the world... unite. We must never acquiesce, for it is together... TOGETHER THAT WE PREVAIL. WE MUST NEVER CEDE CONTROL OF THE MOTHERLAND... Audience: ...FOR IT IS TOGETHER THAT WE PREVAIL!
