who i'd protect for the penguins without looking at contracts

goalies: Fluery

forwards: sid, geno, kessel, hornqvist, Fehr, Sundqvist, plotnikov if he makes an impression this year, bonino if he's resigned, and spong if he will be off his ELC

Defensemen: letang, maatta, pouliot, cole, dumoulin, and unnamed player

As the captain during the best years (so far) why would you think this is not deserved? With a good comeback year, I think that would assure his banner and the acknowledgement for his contributions to the Kings championship years. He is what the Kings represent during this period. The statue may be a little over the top. Kopitar should be the only statue that is added along side gretzky.

If the Kings were an anonymous, interchangeable group of players, then the banner (statue? no way...more than a little over the top) makes sense. But there are three guys (Quick, Drew, Kopi) who deserve it more and to hoist numerous banners cheapens the honor.

And why would a comeback year this year assure a banner goes up? Why would a good individual year now validate an honor that was purportedly already earned? So if Brown gets 50 pts this year, regardless of the Kings' season, he gets a banner, but if he goes 30 pts then it won't happen?

Leave Letang exposed and you might get lucky.

When did the expansion draft occur? My guess would be right before the entry draft but after the playoffs are finished.
- flamminghead

yup the 2000 expansion draft happened on June 23rd. Could be super interesting draft if the KHL transfer agreement is in place too. You might see guys like Kovy, Radulov, and kostitsyn bros coming back, could get big contracts just so the expansion teams hit the cap floor.

Well, I mentioned Robitaille because he does have a statue. But yeah, there are a few guys the Kings have had in the past that were major comtriutors

Exactly. The Brown love is misguided. He had a solid run in 2012, but so did Kopitar. DB sees the writing on the wall, and it says Buffalo. No way he gets a statue, and he shouldn't even get a retired number (but I could see it happening years after he retires, but it still shouldn't). If it's Brown, flush it down.

I hear you, Its just that, take last season out of the equation and Brown exemplifies the "tough to play against" team player that the Kings have been known for.
I have love for him but, for the money hes getting he should be putting up much better numbers. If he was traded to bring in some better talent for the money, or if he was plucked in an expansion draft, it wouldn't make me mad. In hind sight, the banner thing isn't really worth the conversation.

The saddest thing IMO is that if/when he's moved, it will most likely be a pure cap dump and the Kings will end up eating some of it just to get the majority off the books. My biggest beef with DB isn't so much his declining numbers, it's his inability to know his role out on the ice. If he gets a shift on the top line, don't spend it with the puck on your stick, give it up to the talent and get to the net or play bulldog puck retrieval. His puck handling is atrocious.

No doubt. He's a solid player. He had a very good run through the first 5 years of his career and was an all-star once. He took a hometown discount. His run in the 2012 playoffs was awesome. No one, even with his drop off in play, questions his desire and commitment. I hope he makes it back to a level in 2015/2016 where he's scoring (15-25 goals), playing 15 minutes a night, and being a pain in the arse.

This is 100% what the Kings are hoping for with Milan Lucic.

Interesting choice, Jason. You essentially left the work horses unprotected and kept the "gliders", for lack of a better word.
The only forward body left willing to grind it out in the corners or in front of the net is Lucic.
Is it your belief that after a potential expansion, the Kings would trade for toughness or try molding some unnamed prospect?

I would protect Clifford and Brown in exchange for Lewis and Shore. Other than that, pretty good proposal.

Maybe Clifford for shore. The toughness the players you mentioned are easily replaced by hungry third liners currently dying for a chance in the minors. Andreoff is off that ilk. Even Nolan.

my guess is plea deal with a fine and something comparable to community service. Kings will go to arbritration and get a break on Mikes contract maybe and life will go on. Hopefully MR gets it together and with his experience, helps some young guys on another team and is able to revitalize his career somewhat.

I don't know anything about recapture penalties or what kind of cap break Kings will get when this is done but I am ready to see this debacle fade in the rear view mirror
