Tough for me to argue with that logic. - Scooby_Doo
He traded a 5th round selected 18 year old kid for a 2nd round selected 21 year old who was putting up numbers in the AHL, what's so hard to figure out? He was hedging his bets that Clendening had a much better chance to succeed in the NHL than Forsling and the organization was/is pretty much devoid of defensive prospects.
Furthermore, when they saw Clendening and Bonino play, they obviously re-thought what the organization needed more, and it was a guy they think can potentially play second line center.
Bonino was a terrible second line option, when you're 19 year old kid 4th line center is better than your second line center by the end of the year you're probably best to make some changes, which they did. I'm not a big fan of Sutter's but he will take any immediate pressure off Horvat to take on the second line center role and he's better than Bonino in certain areas like face-offs and his foot speed is much better.
Traded • Brandon Sutter • 2016 third round pick (more favorable of Canucks, Islanders picks) (?-?) to Canucks for • Nick Bonino • Alex Clendening • 2016 second round pick (?-?) on 2015-07-28

I like Sutter more than Bonino as well, whether WD and mgmt is actually prepared to give Bo that ice time remains to be seen.
I do find it a bit concerning that the guy who we expect to be a great talent evaluator has moved on from guys he had previously lauded. On one hand I appreciate that he doesn't seem to have an attachment to players that didn't pan out but at same time he said almost the exact same things about Bonino as he did about Sutter after signing him to this extension.
If he was wrong about Bonino, should we be so confident he is right about Sutter?

I don't really care pal. He traded a better player, and two 2nd round picks for a poopty player and a 3rd round pick that according to you, chances of playing in the NHL are extremely slim.
It might be the worst trade the Canucks have made in the last 5 years.

It was the Anh pick so essentially
Bieksa or Anh 2nd
Bonino
Clendening
Forsling
If anyone is interested saw that some preseason stats for some of our latest picks are looking good
Zhukenov 3g 3a in 5gms for Chicoutimi Saguenéens (glad that he will be in NA this year)
Neill 2g 4a in 3 gms (overage year I believe)
Brisbois 3a in 1 gm

Very true….I'm not debating that these are awesome trades, I'm defending the logic (that I can see) behind why he's made the deals he's made. Do I like them all, NO, but i can see the logic in the Sutter trade as I stated above.
I'm also calling BS on him trading away picks for older players, because that's not true. Because it happened once doesn't mean it's the "norm".
I will say this, I agree with Scooby in that I don't understand why he had to add the Ducks second rounder to acquire Sutter??

That's fair, and I think that the 2nd rounder there or the 5th with Kassian etc is where the Benning keeps throwing away picks when he should be acquiring them sentiment comes from.
I just don't think Benning cares about "market value" as far as player worth or contracts go. He IMO sees players he likes and goes out and gets them. That can work as long as the players he is targeting turn out to be legit.
It's nothing personal; however, you might might be on glue if you think Benning holds all the cards and power in the sell off.
He has to rebuild this team with assets that aren't worth much.
There are 29 other GM's in this league that are all trying to win.
You are not privy to what he is getting offered.
Hats off to JB for doing what nobody else seems to have the balls to do. - rugdnit
Just because JB isn't able to get much, doesn't mean that the assets are not worth much. As I posted earlier there is some value in the pieces he has moved out.
I'm not sure what JB has done that nobody else has the balls to do?
Trading Kesler, Bieksa, Garrison, Kassian, Lack and picks for role players, unproven prospects and picks isn't what I would call ballsy.
If he was as involved as some claim in the Seguin trade, that I would consider ballsy, but was it the right move?
