Carol Schram: Vancouver Canucks: Will Brandon Prust Help Drive Scoring Chances? After Brandon Prust was one of the most successful Montreal Canadians at creating scoring chances during last year's playoffs, can he bring a similar skillset to the Vancouver Canucks in 2015-16?

Interesting stuff on Prust, but the guy had 4 goals in 95 games last year so I have to question any stat that suggests he's at a Pacioretty level of creating scoring chances.

There could be another deal with the Habs brewing:

EK broke this 'rumor" yesterday I believe. I don't see it happening as Vancouver has enough centers. If Eller moves to the Wing then maybe but the draft picks going back each way makes me cringe.

Is this article a joke ? Prust is horrible and the nucks got fleeced in that trade. prust will do nothing but help you guys miss the playoffs.

How do you get fleeced when the other guy is an injured addict? If Kassian turns it around then the Habs got the best player by far, but that's a huge if.

I saw that article the other day and while it is interesting that they are adding extra variables to scoring chances I have a few issues with their method and observations.

First of all the sample size is 6 games, (for some unknown reason the author only used the Sens series) I would like to see a larger sample size, as in his career playoff scoring chances before making an observation that he was generating scoring chances at a high level come the post season. Anyone in a small sample size can look great or terrible, and any of these stats IMO are only relevant when used in a larger sample size. I

Secondly adding in hits, extra assists, etc. to the scoring play is very difficult to do without a bias, where is the cutoff ? The only unbiased way would be to count everything from a face off to the goal, but then there is potentially a lot events that have nothing to do with the goal.

All of that said, I looked at his SC differential, which is war-on-ice's SC method (all shots for and against including missed and blocked) and they also show Prust with favorable #'s for last season.

+ 13 in (12gms) 2014 and -10 (13 gms) in 2013
Pacioretty was +24 in 2014 for what its worth

If you go back further

+17 in 2012 (4 gms) and -12 (19 gms) in 2011

As a Sens fan, I wouldn't expect you to know anything more about these two players than their playing style. You probably don't know that Kassian had major back issues last year, along with his inability to be consistent, listen to coaches, and has been rumored to be quite the party animal. Prust is a veteran who knows what to bring each day, and how to play the game right. How can you make a statement like that without them even playing a game? I am not saying one team won the trade because neither player has played yet, therefore I CAN'T.

From last thread…

That's fair, and I think that the 2nd rounder there or the 5th with Kassian etc is where the Benning keeps throwing away picks when he should be acquiring them sentiment comes from.

I just don't think Benning cares about "market value" as far as player worth or contracts go. He IMO sees players he likes and goes out and gets them. That can work as long as the players he is targeting turn out to be legit.

He is acquiring picks on top of our own, but at the same time he's trying to close some organizational gaps that have been left by previous General Managers.

For the two drafts he's been in charge of, regarding 1st, 2nd & 3rd round picks, really Benning has only traded away one second rounder of our own that he wasn't able to recoup, but he got a good 21 year old player for that pick.

I can see Benning trading Sutter and a 2nd for Eller and a 5th, it's like how he rolls.

This is true but he has also traded away 2 other 2nd round picks he acquired (Garrison and Bieksa) and a 3rd (Kesler) for Vey, Sutter and Dorsett. I'm not saying this is the right or wrong move but it doesn't change the fact that he has moved NHL caliber players for picks and then moved those picks for a gamble (Vey), a role player (Dorsett) and a either role player or core player depending on who you ask in Sutter.

I think there is a crowd that questions that if Garrison and Bieksa are worth 2nds, how does Vey and Baertschi garner the same who might never play meaningful minutes.

Ditto for Lack and Pedan.

This goes back to my earlier point of me not thinking Benning cares about the cost relative to "market value". He targets players and gets them.

I didn't realize it was Higgins and dropping a round...

PROPOSED TRADE (idea):

Montreal Canadiens trade:

• Lars Eller

• 3rd round draft pick

Vancouver Canucks:

• Chris Higgins

• 2nd round draft pick

I don't know if that is such a bad trade... We heard some guy had a private conversation with TL about Higgins not being marketable... If last season was the last year of his contract, chances are he'd have been shown the door at the end of last season. We'd like to think he has value, but nobody seems interested... (then again, if MTL is interested, maybe there is a market)

Pretending Higgins isn't even in that deal, if we want another centre for the 3rd/4th line, I guess we would have to make that deal-swapping picks and picking up a centre. Then again, from the main thread, it didn't sound like Ellers had many supporters - would it be that bad to go with what we have?

holy sh!t, i'm all over the place.

Vrbata + Subban for Eller + 3rd

Then people will talk about how he acquired a pick and a younger player and how great it is.
