This is true but he has also traded away 2 other 2nd round picks he acquired (Garrison and Bieksa) and a 3rd (Kesler) for Vey, Sutter and Dorsett. I'm not saying this is the right or wrong move but it doesn't change the fact that he has moved NHL caliber players for picks and then moved those picks for a gamble (Vey), a role player (Dorsett) and a either role player or core player depending on who you ask in Sutter.
I think there is a crowd that questions that if Garrison and Bieksa are worth 2nds, how does Vey and Baertschi garner the same who might never play meaningful minutes.
Ditto for Lack and Pedan.
This goes back to my earlier point of me not thinking Benning cares about the cost relative to "market value". He targets players and gets them. - belcherbd
Yes it appears that he makes his mind up on something and goes for it. It also appears, as you said earlier, when he thinks there's something better out there or what he's tried hasn't worked, he has no issues with change. |

I didn't realize it was Higgins and dropping a round...
PROPOSED TRADE (idea):
Montreal Canadiens trade:
• Lars Eller
• 3rd round draft pick
Vancouver Canucks:
• Chris Higgins
• 2nd round draft pick
I don't know if that is such a bad trade... We heard some guy had a private conversation with TL about Higgins not being marketable... If last season was the last year of his contract, chances are he'd have been shown the door at the end of last season. We'd like to think he has value, but nobody seems interested... (then again, if MTL is interested, maybe there is a market)
Pretending Higgins isn't even in that deal, if we want another centre for the 3rd/4th line, I guess we would have to make that deal-swapping picks and picking up a centre. Then again, from the main thread, it didn't sound like Ellers had many supporters - would it be that bad to go with what we have?
holy sh!t, i'm all over the place. - hillbillydeluxe

Oh - I didn't see it.
I'm smoking some candied salmon I made over the past few days so I've gotta stick around the house today. Thus I've got time to read |

Two summers ago everyone here was all over Eller. If he is your 4 th line centre even at his cap hit it is a better option that two more years of Higgins.
Vey is not a 4 th liner |

I remember you specifically saying two years ago Burrows could not be traded to Mtl for Eller because of age. Now you say he's crappy .
Who do you realistically think the Canucks will get this year or next and what do they have to pay ? |

You have me confused with someone. But yes, I do believe that both he and Burrows are basically cap dumps.
I've never been a big Eller fan, I thought he was overrated especially after that fluky playoff run he had. I remember posting that the Habs overpaid when everyone was all over him saying how he was a clutch player. |

Ok
You didn't answer the question
Do you want different players or do you want to keep the same ones we have?
Who have you targeted as a good pick up?
What will it cost to get them?

He's a third line centre. Better option than Vey .
It is a lot of money to spend on a 4 th line . He is a decent 2 way centre good size , not really tough , can score |

Not directed at me but Cizikas would be at the top of my list. NYI has a glut of young Centres who are ready now and have a couple of excellent prospects in Barzal and Beauvillier on the way. I doubt he would cost much,

If the Eller rumors are true I'm starting to think maybe MNGT isn't sold on Vey just yet. If we legitimally have a chance to move Higgins we may want to take it. We will miss a few of the things Higgins brings, but it may be a good opportunity to open up another spot for a winger and get solidified depth down all 4 lines of center. Whic we haven't had in awhile. Hank-Sutter-Horvat-Eller don't sound too bad.
Let the kool aid flow!

I want different players if it helps the team's long-term cap flexibility/potential, I definitely don't want to give away more picks/prospects to do so either. Getting different players just for the hell of it is plain stupid.
Eller is a horrible target for multiple reasons. If we don't have the assets to acquire good young players then just hold onto our older assets and move them for picks/prospects when the market picks up, if they still don't interest then keep them around as vets and let them walk as UFA's. Better than trading them with higher picks or prospects for a younger stopgap tweener. |

It is better than Vey.Vey reminds me of that centre we had a few years ago that went to Europe. His dad played in the NHL and I think his pops is with the Oilers now |
