I am a little surprised Mike Zalewski is attending, thought he was on a 1 way with Utica. What was the name of the little guy that was an invitee last camp and scored a few goals, got signed and ended up in the echl? |

I think they'll be more competitive than the "directionless" crowd thinks they will. The actual changes to the lineup are really small compared to last years team which did very well, plus, Bo Horvat is one year older, Linden Vey is a year older and wiser, Sven Baertschi seems to have grown both personally and as a player and Jake Virtanen might, just might, be ready for NHL action.
Lets be honest, the team goes as the twins go. They don't appear to be any worse than they were last year so our offensive numbers should stay the same, providing the younger players can fill the void of goals left by Matthias.
The forward group is just meh…it's the defensive group that's the scary part. - LeftCoaster
I think it really depends on whether Miller can be healthy and improve on his IMO below average play last year.
Vey and Baertschi are the two other players that IMO have a chance to breakout but they also have a chance to flame out.
There are few players on this current roster who had down years from what was expected or looked primed for to breakout.
Horvat played great but I don't expect him to continue to shoot at an elite level.
I think this team rode a hot Lack down the stretch and goal tending remains the biggest question mark.
I don't think the D got any worst but it certainly didn't improve, and was at times absolutely atrocious last season. |

Its tough to see soo many people comment on Sutter before he has been given a legitmate chance at being a #2 center. Most teams #1 center's would fall behind Malkin and Crosby in terms of talent anyways so lets just see how it plays out. This thread is the same thing on repeat every damn thread regardless of what Carol posts. Let Sutter have 20 games to get used to his linemates and play a 2C role before we argue any longer about the same old song and dance. - Codes1087
I agree that Sutter needs to be seen before deciding if he is a bum or not, but last season he was ranked 55th in TOI per game which included 1.31 of PP and 2.18 of PK time. He was playing #2 minutes and likely will not get the same amount of playing time here.
If we agree that Sutter needs 20 games or whatever before judging him, shouldn't we of expected Benning to do the same before committing to him for 5 more years? |

Below average? He was just average IMO, rarely very good but rarely very bad. A couple of both though.
Miller was hurt Feb. 22nd against the Islanders and had 28 of the teams total of 48 wins to that date, including that game. This notion that they rode Lack is false; following Feb. 22nd Lack had 12 total wins out of 23 remaining games.
As for Vey and Baertschi, IMO neither will breakout or flameout, as you put it. Both are young and still getting their feet wet in the NHL, I'd expect nothing more than 30-35 point seasons out of both and to be honest I'd be pretty ok with that. |

This is my biggest issue with Benning, WTF has Sutter done to deserve that contract in his mind??? I don't understand that….I really don't!!! |

Well said. Lack was .500 at best as a 'starter' here and that aint PO material. Yes we will have swings with Miller but Miller should flirt with 40 wins without injury.

Not unreasonable expectations if Sven is on the 2nd line and 2nd pp... just looking at Vey's production last season, 75gp and 24pts... any improvement on that would be great.
Really wonder what WD is planning for lines and roles. |

To be fair to Eddie, Jacob Markstrom played one of those final 23 games and got the win against Arizona.

I would also be okay with 30-35 pt seasons, my point was more that those are two guys who have the offensive potential to breakout.
Honestly not trying to rehash the Miller/Lack thing. I think Miller under-performed and is one of the few players on this roster that I expect to improve as long as he is healthy.
I know Miller was hurt and acknowledge that he didn't get a chance to turn his again IMO below average season around. His sv% ranks 24th out of 30 goalies who played at least 40 games. That is below average in my books.
Lack might of only won 12 of the last 23 games but 21 of those 23 games he provided + .915% goal-tending with the lowest being 2 games of .913 and 16 of those games being at or above .918 ( which is my mark for being above average).
Had Lack not been able to play at that level, we likely lose a lot more of those games.
I say .918 because the 15th best goalie who played a minimum of 40 games was .918% |

I agree and it goes back to my point yesterday that I think Benning has a vision of what he wants and is confident that those players he targets will work out. |
