AGREED, BUT MAKING A RASH DECISION BASED ON WHAT HE MIGHT HAVE DONE IS NOT WISE...AND SINCE NOBODY KNOWS WHAT HE DID YET, MOVING HIM NOW WOULD BE SILLY..
IMO - Ogilthorpe2
And this is the dilemma facing the Hawks - they have to make a decision to keep or trade him or suspend him before camp opens - without all the facts. Those detains need to weigh both on ice and off ice factors.
They presumably don't know how the legal issues will play and how different scenarios affect how Kane and the organization are perceived. Do no charges mean people see him as innocent? What about a civil settlement or a plea bargain?
What do the Hawks actually think of Kane after this? Do they think he might have actually assaulted this woman and how does that affect their relationship with him? Do they think his issues are alcohol related and that he is committed to addressing them? What are the hockey implications of a trade, suspension, etc?
So decisions - rash or otherwise - are going to be made before all the facts are known.

Everyone assumes he was drunk. Do we know that? If there have been no charges and now sounds like no settlement talks, I'd guess maybe he thinks he didn't do it. Maybe.. maybe? I know it sounds stupid, but maybe he wasn't drunk? It can and does sometimes happen. |

HI MEX!
HOPE ALL IS WELL SOUTH OF THE BORDER!
I DISAGREE VEHEMENTLY WITH THIS ENTIRE LINE OF THINKING, BUT I'D LOVE THE CHANCE TO HAVE YOU HELP ME UNDERSTAND HOW TRADING A TOP END OFFENSIVE TALENT, WHO HAS PROVEN TO BE AS CLUTCH OF A PLAYER AS THERE CURRENTLY IS IN THE LEAGUE, COULD POSSIBLY MAKE THE TEAM BETTER? IT'S PRETTY WELL ACCEPTED PREMISE THAT THE TEAM GIVING UP THE BEST PLAYER IN THE TRADE USUALLY COMES OUT ON THE SHORT END OF THE TRADING STICK...AT LEAST IN THE SHORT TERM. YEAH YOU MIGHT GET MULTIPLE ASSETS BACK, BUT ARE ANY OF THEM GOING TO SCORE AT A PPG CLIP THIS YEAR? EVEN COLLECTIVELY CAN THEY SCORE AT A PPG CLIP?
IF SAAD, SHARP, AND JOHNNY O WERE STILL IN THE FOLD, I'D BE A LOT MORE INCLINED TO SEE THE WISDOM IN SHEDDING KANERS CAP HIT.
AGAIN, ALL OF THIS IS CONTINGENT ON KANE BEING A FREE MAN COME OCTOBER, BUT I FAIL TO SEE HOW TRADING KANE BENEFITS THE TEAM IN THE SHORT TERM.
HAVE A GREAT DAY AMIGO.

So were you a Hawk fan in the 60s and 70s?
I also hate to break it to you (and everyone), but a lot of commercial airline pilots are functional alcoholics—until they get help, or worse.
Look out below. - John Jaeckel
that guy in the movie who was played by denzel was a functional alcoholic... he even flew a plane upside down to keep it in the air... and eventually landed it and saved a bunch of lives...
now that was one functional alcoholic.... |

Mark the Maple Leafs down for Dion and a 4th rounder. Now just who the hell could beat that deal. |

My guess. Sabres, Leafs, Canadiens, Rangers...not sure about 5th but Flyers always seem to be itching to trade half their team |

With all due respect, I find it hard to believe that a front office as savvy as the hawks would tell JJ or anyone else but their true intentions regarding Kane. If, contrary to reports, they are of the mind to trade him, they would never let that leak, its the equivalent of telling the market, I'm a forced seller, give me your best low ball offer. Better to control the message, look like the benevolent father figure to Kane, say all is now good with him, then trade him down the road in a more stable market. |

Let's be realistic here, folks.
Did five bored GMs phone the Blackhawks and have idle chit chat about if the 'hawks decided to trade Kane? Sure, seems plausible.
But no GM is going to do a single thing until this ugly mess is cleaned up - no one is going to risk trading for a guy who may go to prison (and be unavailable for hockey). Not to mention the PR nightmare it will be.
Until the legal troubles are resolved, Kane is going nowhere. Absolutely nowhere. |

no but im sure they phoned wondering if he would be available if this situation clears up. IF they say they would consider moving them, now those GMs have a game plan and can figure out what they would want to do or offer if he is clear and on the market.
I assume itsts just preparation and not phoning giving offers. Like you said no one is doing anything until or if it clears up |

alcoholism is a behavioral issue. change in behavior makes the problem go away
type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune issue - pancreas stop producing insulin. requires multiple insulin injections per day to keep the person alive. no change in behavior will make the issue go away.
type 2 diabetes, pancreas still functions. change in life style does have a dramatic effect on symptoms and treatment - completely different than type 1 - Confederate
You can lock up an alcoholic and keep them away from booze for whatever period of time you like, but they will still be an alcoholic. Stopping them from drinking or changing their behavior doesn't change the fact that they are an alcoholic. |

No, not PERIOD.
You don't know, and neither do I, but if he is, it sure as hell ain't affecting his on-ice performance.
When he gets in trouble, alcohol is involved...great. How many times has that been? 3 times that we know of...in 8 years.

not knowing when to stop drinking is not a disease, its a behavioral issue. putting a title on it doesn't make it one either - Confederate
It really doesn't matter what you call it. Alcoholism destroys lives, and you don't beat it, you just treat it. I've always felt it was more akin to an allergy, but an allergy that you get addicted to. That's enough like a disease for me. |

i'd agree by and large confederate, however, once the person's body is addicted to alcohol, there are brain chemistry and physiological issues that take hold and make it difficult for the person to just 'quit'...
becoming an alcoholic can be prevented by responsible partaking of alcohol, so it is behavioural, but changing your behaviour after becoming an addict is the issue and then it takes more than just will power, imo... |

The medical profession begs to differ:
According to the American Medical Association, National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), The National Institutes of Health, The World Health Organization, The American Psychiatric Association and numerous other organizations in the scientific and medical fields, addiction is now known to be a chronic and progressive brain disease that attacks and damages key parts of the limbic system and cerebral cortex, which in turn results in compulsive cravings, obsessive seekings, and irrational over-use despite harmful and often devastating consequences.
Addiction is considered a brain disease because alcohol and drugs literally change the brain chemically, structurally and functionally. While it’s true that for most people the initial decision to partake of alcohol or drugs is voluntary, over time these substances literally change numerous aspects of the brain to the point where the individual cannot stop using or drinking even if the desire to do so is high. |

This piece is very important. The human brain doesn't fully develop until around age 25 so repeated drug/alcohol abuse by young people can stunt an individual's development. A 24 year old addict who has been using for 8 years will often behave like a 16 year old.
Using drugs or alcohol is a choice, becoming an addict is not.

replace the word alcohol with cig in your sentences....same thing....just doesn't have a "disease" name associated with smoking - Confederate
Addiction is a disease, it doesn't matter what you are addicted to - drugs, alcohol, work, sex, video games, cigarettes..... |

There is a lot more to the addiction issue than most people think. Have you heard about this latest research? The conclusions include 1) that the opposite of addiction is not sobriety, it is human connection, and 2) it is not the rat who is to blame, it is the cage!
It's interesting to consider Patrick Kane's situation - what we know of it, anyway - from this perspective; especially what help he might need.

Yup, and I've known people who are addicted to more than one thing in that list, yet are still highly functional in their profession (physicians, attorneys, etc.). Sad.... |
