I didn't mind the actual targeting of Vey since his jr/ahl production was solid but LA was going to potentially waive him starting last season so Benning had leverage unless there was a bidding war. Plus Benning is supposed to be scouting oriented yet Vey/Clendening didn't/haven't worked out.
Gotta wonder if Vey was being carried a bit in the AHL by Toffoli. - Nucker101
And Pearson, but to be fair he hasn't played with talented teammates for the most part in van

Very true. Vey may come around playing a full season with the right linemates. |

the thing i like about vey was he was the first to admit he had a disappointing season and vowed to spend the summer working his ass off. hes still young and last year was just his rookie year so i think we are writing him off a little soon. |

He started on PP1 with legit 1st liners and didn't do much. |

I was actually impressed with Vey on the PP to start. Didn't the power play get off to a hot start last season?
It was almost everything else about his game that I didn't like. But who knows. Maybe he actually was making his linemates better but they just weren't good linemates. |

He was decent, but the Sedins/Vrbata did most of the work from what I remember. He spent most of the time in the slot without touching the puck much. It started off hot but once teams figured out that Vrbata was basically the trigger man, it tailed off until Weber was added to it to take pressure/focus off of Vrbata. It's kind of hot not to score some points playing with the Twins.
It's too soon to write him off, but he seems very tweener-ish so far.
Some people want ton see him play with more skilled linemates, but yet he looks like a sore thumb in a top 6(on paper) and it seems like Benning wants a more gritty bottom 6. |

He's a square peg, no doubt, but I'm actually really interested to see what he brings this season. Considering that he was a bit of an undersized centre playing fairly unprotected minutes for a coach that distributes his ice time pretty evenly and doesn't really believe in line marching, I'd say he had a pretty successful rookie season.
If he's had a good offseason, he's a player that could provide some unexpected but sorely needed secondary scoring. If not than he'll be replaced. |

Just had a chance to watch the game in it's entirety.
Here are a few of my observations.
Subban was the best player by far for the Canucks, his skating and stick-handling are no surprise but he did very well positionally and was pretty successful against McDavid and Co. all night.
He was physically very impressive against many of the oilers, particularly Draisatl who looked butter soft considering his size. Needs to hit the net with his shots.
I was disappointed in McCann's skating, I would of thought he was more dynamic, perhaps he is not yet in game shape considering he has been injured all summer. A couple of good shots and nice passes.
Zhukenov was very impressive and I think he has a good future, the best skating forward for the Canucks by a large margin and very good hands. Did not shy away from the front of the net, board work or physical play. Nice to see the coaching staff reward him with better players as the game went on.
Sautner and Brisbois were brutal and I'm pretty sure there was an error as I thought I counted them on the ice for 5 of the 8 goals. Not surprised Brisbois looked overwhelmed as he is very young.
Witt played pretty well considering it was 8 goals against. The 5th goal was the only stinker I noticed and I thought he had some impressive saves.
Hutton played well and I was surprised to see he is a very good passer, he had a couple of nice breakout passes.
Virtanen was as advertised, very physical, nice offensive skills, especially the one move cutting in-front of the net. Definitely needs to learn to play with his teammates if he is going to be more than an 3rd liner.
Gaunce as many noted played well, I was impressed with his puck pursuit, his skating didn't look bad at all and had some nice offensive moments either cutting to the net or passing. Very involved along the boards and behind the net.
Stewart again as advertised, lots of physicality but very little hockey sense. Saw the puck die a lot on his stick, Petit in particular set him up a few times only to see Stewart flail at the puck.
Abols had some moments but was invisible otherwise, not sure his -3 is indicative of his play or just unlucky.
Cassels looked slow and I wonder if he is still recovering from his injury.
Shink looked very out of place the first 2 periods but really picked up his play in the 3rd. He is not a dynamic enough skater to take advantage of his obvious offensive abilities. Looked really good around the net with the puck on his stick though.
LaLeggia looked really good for the Oil and Nurse was dominant.
McDavid looked good but maybe was trying to hard.
Draisatl is very unimpressive IMO, he can pass but looks like a floater for much of the game and so very weak.
Laurikainen had a good game and was impressive in the first period in particular. - belcherbd
I think this is coming from an extremely uneducated viewpoint.
its the game he plays. he slows the game down and dictates the pace. this is how hes always played, including juniors. I suppose this could give the impression he floats, but its far from accurate. (I wont bother making comparisons to the nhl stars of that ilk, but I will say that there are a few superlative centers in the show with similar size that play a pace dictating game and it doesn't look like theyre speed demons either. but so effective regardless)
and weak like how? he is a skill player so no he doesn't skate around looking to crush people. but he absolutely uses his size to muscle the puck to the net and protect it both down low and in traffic. im seriously wondering what it is you saw? he s extremely strong on the puck. maybe there was a brief instance where something happened where he made a weak play and that stuck with you and you extrapolated his effectiveness all night?
to go a step further, he actually did hammer someone below the hash marks of the nucks end in the second period. but again, generally speaking, he doesn't look for the big hit
he essentially played the same game against calgary last night and had another multi point game.
not an attempt at an attack on you whatsoever, I just wholeheartedly disagree with the play of draisaitl that you speak of |

Yes for sure. Like many players he needs to be put in the right situations to succeed and with the right linemates. I get Vey's weaknesses but he can work on those in time. He needs work on faceoffs and defensive zone coverage that much is imminent...but he brings much needed speed and playmaking ability. The thing is that he doesn't have much time. 4LC is pretty much the only spot open to him (for the most part) unless they plan on trying him on the wing. If Eller comes in for eg. or if one of the kids steals 4LC (like Horvat did) where does Vey fit? He really doesn't have much time to solidify a spot and he needs a good amount of it to work on his NHL game. |

Agree.
Nucker said he played with the twins. Only a handful of players have had success playing with them seeing they play a two man cycle game. Players that can take a pounding in front of the net usually find success with them.
After the twins the talent levels for years dropped off quick.

I can't claim to know anything about his style of play except the few times I've seen him. He doesn't seem involved in the play unless he has the puck on his stick.
I called him weak because I saw him outmuscled and outworked multiple time by two of our smallest prospects, subban specifically but also Zhukenov. I did see the hit he made but again that isn't the weakness I was referring to. I expected him to be stronger along the boards.
Obviously he is talented and I'm sure he will develop but I don't see him as the big strong centre that will go head to head against the west's strongest players as I have heard Edmonton fans hope.
