I feel like the trade was hastily made. It's like they really wanted to move Hartnell out - PhillySportsGuy
I agree with that. Almost like Hexy was flexing his muscles, showing that no one was safe. |

Ron Hextall doesn't need a lawnmower. He just imagines that every blade of grass is Kent Nilsson. |

If we look at Hextall's m.o., he doesn't do anything hastily. He is very process oriented, and he takes his time. I believe they expected Umberger to be much better than he was.

If they're out by Thankgiving and trades commence that's a possibility. You know Hextall isn't going to add anything at the deadline even if they're close. He'll still be trading away aging pieces. That's his M.O. |

If the Flyers are in a legitimate playoff spot, I don't see him trading away veterans. He hasn't established an M.O. for what he would do if the team is in a playoff spot around the deadline, as a GM.

Yeah no idea what he does in contention think it's a balancing act between can young guys contribute and what can we get back in deals. I don't think he's dealing people for 5th rounders. Unless it's vinny. Lol. |

Does anyone know why they wanted him out so bad? He was a good offensive player, stats show he's not a defensive liabilty, he was a leader, fan favorite, I still don't understand what the rush was.

Last year they were like 6 pts out and he traded Timmonen and Coburn and added nothing. He's in cap correction mode. I'm Not saying they were bad trades, just that he's realistic about where this team is and isn't going to add to a first round loser |

Last year around the deadline, the team was floundering, and going backwards, and showing no signs of moving up into a playoff spot. There's a difference between not adding, and not subtracting. |

The fear was that, at the end of his contract, his body would be worn down by his style of play and, coupled with his age, his contract would be an albatross. Basically, what Umberger was like last year, but 3 years from now, when they expect to contend. So they decided to take their lumps now. |

I also heard he was a bad kind of a leader in the sense that he came in out of shape religiously every year and he didn't buy in to Berube system. Never heard a true confirmation this was part of the reason but it's been speculated. |
