BERLIN — Volkswagen AG Chief Executive Officer Martin Winterkorn, who catapulted VW to the top spot in global sales during eight years at the helm, has stepped down after admitting the automaker cheated on U.S. emissions tests.

Since becoming CEO in 2007, Winterkorn led a turnaround that propelled VW from an also-ran that had cut 20,000 German jobs under his predecessor to a global powerhouse with about 600,000 employees across a stable of 12 brands from Lamborghini supercars to Scania heavy trucks.

VW have not yet announced Winterkorn’s successor.

The new CEO’s top priority will be getting to the bottom of a scheme intended to dupe regulators and consumers about emissions of diesel engines installed in 11 million cars worldwide — more vehicles than VW sells in a year.

The automaker set aside €6.5 billion euros ($9.6 billion Cdn.) on Tuesday to cover potential costs.

Also,

the reasons for bypassing emissions is to increase performance (and mileage I believe).

So... what happens when they recall and "fix" these hundreds of thousands of cars. You have to think that the class action suits will have some serious teeth when all of a sudden you get your, now legal, automobile back and the performance and mileage are significantly worse.

I have to admit, I love seeing companies that pull this crap have to face the music once in a while.
