Agreed, but when he was a Leaf you had enough people saying they wouldn't even take him for no assets at that cap hit because he's such a cancer and one dimensional...now that he's on the Pens the tone has changed a bit on Kessel, his appraisal has definitely gone up on hockeybuzz.

For sure - I didn't mind trading him....wish we got more and didn't eat salary - I think we caved to easy IMO

True. Just seems that way cuz it appeared like former regimes drafted players as if they were playing pin the tail on the donkey or trying to hit a pinata. Blindfolded and disoriented.

Agreed, although none of us were in the war room hearing what was going on. I don't have issue with the return as pieces. It's the 'lottery protection' and retained salary I didn't like.

Why are people making a big deal about the retained salary? We wont be a max team for a long time.

Yes, the amount isn't really an issue. Problem for me is the length. Only allowed 3, and we now have 1on the books for a while.

Not a big deal - just don't like it - doing Pitts a favor and they still didn't give us the prospect we wanted - (frank) THE PENS

Because:

A. The Kessel cloud will continue to hang over the team, and
B. In 3 or 4 years, we might need that space, who knows?

most of our top young guys are at least 3-4 years away from making any kind of decent salary. 1.2 in a cap that keeps rising over 70m is peanuts.

prediction: Leafs have a TONNE of cap space after moving almost all of their UFA's this year, and only Rielly due a significant raise.

it would be a shock if they even miss the playoffs, and at best hold a 1% chance to draft 1st. The leafs had to retain a buit of salary to get it done, and 1.2 is not too rough.
The leafs had to give up 1.5% of their cap space to move a guy that wasnt part of the plan moving forward. still beats being an internal cap team like the sens

The Canucks did build a very good team but it seemed like once their window was wide open it quickly stated to shut. I can't find many issues with how the built their team, but how they managed that team once the pieces were in place were questionable, starting with letting Errhoff go, all the NMC's the signed and of course the goalie fiasco.
But again, they built a Hell of a team....I take it you disagree with the way they did it?

Works out to an average of each player leaving $52, 000 on the table. Call it a Kessel tax. Lots of money to a guy like me, can't imagine it would make or break a contract negotiation.

they build a team that was good in the regular season. they had a great playoff run where they poop the bed in the finals. I wouldn't call that a winning model. Their team missed the playoffs 2 years ago, and got stomped in rd 1 last year. they are at best a 50% to make it this year, and their best guys are all 33+.

Chicago, LA, Detroit..winning models
