Do we know for sure? No, of course not. Where would I put my money? Not even close. The track record for #2 overall picks is pretty damn good.
Either way, it wasn't like the statement hinged on Reinhart. He is one of 6 very very good players that we brought in. - Slump Buster
In his defense, Grigo was slated to go top 3-5 if I remember correctly. |

The world is littered with talented but flawed players that were taken lower because of the flaws. Seeing as more than a dozen teams passed on him he probably went where he should have. |

And the 2014 draft is known as a weaker draft class than most. Sam reinhart is not your prototypical 2nd overall pick |

So he goes 3 or 4 in another year (maybe)? The track record is still very good for top 5 picks.

I'm not debating Reinhart's ability, while I have serious doubts that he is even the 2nd or 3rd best forward in his class, I do believe he will be very good.
What I'm debating, and what I have always said is that I think we tend to discount the players we traded away as if we already have their career paths mapped out.

To a small degree, I can agree, but overall, I don't think so.
We were hopeful that Armia could be a top line winger. All evidence is to the contrary so far.
Ditto Grigorenko being a top 2 line center or even top line center, and again, all evidence to the contrary to this point.
It's always a challenge trading away what could be for a known quantity.
The fact that Murray got known quantities (the degree of the known, meaning how great you think the players are that he got, is to each individual to determine) that are young and their ages tie in nicely to the age of the young drafted talent on the team and those coming up from the farm is the most important thing to note to me. |

Let's do this another way with the players Buffalo traded away (those that have either played in the NHL already or were drafted prior to the 2015 draft.
Myers: Hope = Number 1 D, Reality = Number 2/Number 3 D, Middle Ground = Number 2 D
Zadorov: Hope = Part of the twin towers as top pairing D with Ristolainen for years to come, Reality = High end Number 3/2nd pairing D, Middle Ground = Number 2/3 D
Armia: Hope = Top Line RW, Reality = 3rd line RW, Middle Ground = 2nd line RW
Lemieux: Hope = 2nd line impact forward (phyiscal and scoring), Reality = 3rd line pest whose scoring won't translate to the NHL level, Middle Ground = 3rd line forward that could play spot duty on the 2nd line
Compher: Hope = All out effort player like Drury who could play in all situations on the 2nd and 3rd line, Reality = bottom 6 player who will never score consistently enough to play a top 6 role, Middle Ground = key 3rd line forward
The picks are where it becomes muddled, but I think I would rather have O'Reilly, Kane, Bogosian, and Eichel over the group above, and I say that fully believing the trade with the Jets was crucial to Buffalo finishing in last. |

In the grand scheme of things, on paper it looks like we gained a ton and lost little because what we gave up we haven't seen yet. I don't see it that way. I see that we traded quantity with the potential to turn into quality, for quality.

Agreed. Only Zads and *maybe* Girgs had any kind of real top 6 ceiling (I think Armia pretty much fell off the table). We got proven players that are just coming in to their prime or will at their prime in a couple of years. That really is incredible. |
