Trades couldnt be made with the other teams Kesler listed... in the end it was the Ducks. There may have been other teams interested... but it was in Kesler's control. - boonerbuck
I agree completely and I don't doubt that Benning tried his best to get his best return. If he says he targeted Bonino and Sbisa for top 6 and top 4 roles then I believe him.
What I don't know and I don't think you know either was whether Kesler said no to deals from Pit or Chi or if Benning said no or if those GM's said no.
Benning was still over a barrel but from what I remember it was 3 team barrel not a 1 team barrel that is often mentioned in defense of the trade.

I don't think that many young players have forced management's hand yet. As far as forwards go, I think Gaunce has earned a spot and McCann has earned the right to up to 9 games to show that he can continue to do in the regular season what he's done in the pretend season. - KB3Point0
...and Hutton has been amazing for a first look at a prospect... but there's no way in hell that a full season in the AHL quarterbacking the top PP unit is going to hurt his development... probably the opposite is true. There shouldnt be a single touchy feely tear about a better player being sent down. Lets think long term.

It's clear now that Sbisa wasn't just a cap dump Benning was forced to take, he actually wanted him. Can only imagine what other asset ANA would have given up instead(Rakell, Perrault, Etem, 2nd or 3rd rounder, etc.) |

I think I missed it a couple days ago (just know feelings is the trigger), the board is busy. Least anticipated season? I think they must say that every year.
People are into the lineup possibilities. But think it will be closer to status quo as it is most years. |

True, but there's a lot more evidence that supports him than disputes his claim. - Nucker101

Hes 22, I don't think a season in the NHL would hurt either. If he wins spot outright I am fine with waiving or losing someone to waivers. You put your best players on the ice.

So when they say "open competition" what they really mean is "open competition for waiver eligible players only"
If a young kid looks ready, I say give him the spot. It'll be a big confidence boost, plus he's learning from NHL vets, and it shows the veterans and prospects in your organization that a rookie can earn a spot from a waiver eligible player making for a more competitive internal environment. It wouldn't be the end of the world if they kepet him up either, especially with WD as coach since he rolls all 4 lines and 3 D pairings. The only issue is that Hutton is a LHD. |

EXACTLY
Maybe our GM should start taking some time haggling, seeing as he stated he loves draft picks more than any other GM. - classic321
... but don't lose an opportunity over it..... Gillis did lots of time consuming haggling...took lesser trades later because that evetually put him in a position of weakness... anyways...

I think they knew what Sbisa was. Considering that Perrault, Etem, DSP were all moved you have to think they could of been had.
They still would of had to take back some salary though. Again I wouldn't of been critical of Sbisa being attached had he been brought in with the expectation of being a depth player and was compensated as such this past summer.

True, but he had no reason to rush the Bonino trade. The Lack/Bieksa/Kassian/Kesler trades sure, there's some urgency. Sutter was a pending UFA and was not in PIT's long-term plans. Bonino still had 2 years left, was happy being here, and was not hurting the team.
And why did he rush to sign Sbisa/Sutter? Again, he had no reason to. |

It started with Subban not getting into preseason games and someone mentioned that it wasn't fair and would send him a message that even though he looked like one of the best prospects in Penticton he wasn't rewarded with a game or two.
Now of course any mention of a player being sent down we all worry if their feeling will be hurt. |
