If they keep him on the team after, his first game back is against McJesus

The oilers will be in Austin mathews mode by then. It will be the coach and goalies fault.

on the basis he's not a repeat offender according to the NHL's own rules you pos. get a clue...

Chris Simon got 30 games and he literally stomped on a guy's body part with his skate blade. this guy did what was legal up until a few years ago... they gave him 25 games some time ago, but jumping it up to 41 is a stretch...

there's no precedent for this length of suspension.

- kaptaan

Yeah, no, the CBA does give them the right to suspend players based upon precedents and on escalating scales. The fact that he's not a 'repeat offender' as of the new CBA doesn't automatically wipe away previous discipline. If they didn't grieve Bertuzzi's case when he got suspended indefinitely after the Moore incident, they sure as heck won't here.

the got his 25 game suspension cut down to 21 the last time he got a lengthy suspension... if they appeal, maybe they get it down to 30-35 games.

it won't be much of a union if they just accept this kind of punishment when it basically affects the guy's earning ability and potential future earning potential.

i'm not saying i don't agree with the suspension. just that the union will appeal the length since it'll set the bar for future incidents and players. the union has always shown a preference to intervene on behalf of players getting suspended.

So apparently his cap hit and roster spot will count for SJ. Ouch.
- Nucker101

I still think Mike Richards cap should count towards LA

Complete Bull-Sh!t that they got out of that contract on some technicality.

That's just the pro-rated salary that he forfeits as a result of the suspension

i like how LA got rid of richards... the union appealed that one, let's see where it ends up.

maybe the Habs can use that as a way to terminate Kassian's contract as well. guy injures himself and violates code of conduct clause at the same time making himself unavailable to play.

What about the earning ability and future earning potential of the players receiving all these hits from Torres??

They have no leg to stand on, the hit was clearly illegal, the appeal would be thrown out of any court. This isn't the NFL vs the NFLPA where the commissioner solely decides the length/breadth of discipline and arbitrates over the appeals. He has a clear history of this sort of thing, the suspension isn't out of line with previous discipline against him. If there was some sort of mitigating circumstance, then I could see an appeal/grievance working and being worth the money to the union. The video clearly shows no such thing.

I've been a shop steward and a union rep before and while we'd greive something like this, we'd do so knowing that an independant arbitrator likely rules against us based upon past history, no mitigating circumstances (ie Silverberg turns his head, puts himself in a vulnerable position, puck being playable etc.) and clear video evidence of the infraction.

What did you guys think of Clendening? He's looked better than Pouliot and Dumoulin in Pittsburgh so far this offseason and was working out all summer at the facility so he seems very dedicated.
- jfkst1

He was ranked 8-10 on Canucks so if he cracked your top 6 I would be concerned about what type of year you would have

I remember folks saying that Vey was in a bad situation in LA because he was victim of a deep roster. I guess the acquisition of Cracknell has given the canucks a deep roster.

Edit: Vey reminds me of Kyle Wellwood without the skill.

So he is absolutely useless then?

Hindsight is 20/20. At the time of the Garrison trade Benning was trying to roll over a stale roster filled with NTC's. Bieksa was a top 4 D man while Garrison was making 4.5 in a 5/6 roll.

Benning traded a 2nd for Vey (as he did for Sven) to bridge the age gap between the vets and the recent draft picks. The Canucks had nobody under the age of 25 that was going to step in a make an impact anytime soon. I think the Canucks are pretty fortunate to have Horvat looking ready for a 2nd line roll and the potential of McCann, Virtanen and Hutton coming down the pipe so quickly. I don't think anyone could have predicted this 14 months ago.
