It has already been shown over the past decade that fighting does not stop anything and does not make anyone think twice. The only thing that makes people think twice is their pocket book, and the only way to hit them in their pocket book is via large suspensions. - KB3Point0

It's kind of like correlating smoking to lung cancer. It can be a cause but there are many non-smokers that end up with lung cancer. - golfingsince

Ferland continued to run people after the fight. He took HUGE runs at guys throughout the game, especially in the 3rd. Took a couple massive runs at Hutton. So no, you are wrong.
It's cute that your example of how fighting holds players accountable doesn't actually involve fighting though! - KB3Point0
Well it eventually does lead to fighting in my league and it happens often to the idiots who run around. I just assumed that people here "like you" would probably freak out and call it caveman tactics, so I left it out.
It's funnier to hear how a physical game with hitting and fighting, is not effected in any way by the fighting, In your opinion.
I guarantee you have never played a serious game of hockey (body contact with skates on and a ref) before in your life, or you wouldn't be saying any of this stuff.
So go ahead keep running your mouth. I expect it. |

Nice analogy, and the answer is yes there should steps taken, and I believe the NHL has taken some steps and will continue to take steps.
I noticed that there is not an outright ban on smoking in this country and I don't believe there should be an outright ban of fighting in the NHL.
There are inherent dangers in most occupations, or choices people make everyday. The onus is on the person, which one way they can do this is to educate yourself, and be aware of the risks and what do you need to do to mitigate the risk.
I don't need big brother "bubble wrapping" everything in life, be it smoking, drinking, or hockey fights. - Makita
I haven't seen the league do anything to implement change and maybe they won't need to as the league adjusts itself.
At this point though most fights are staged events still including last night's two IMO. |

And its wrong every time it happens. I have no respect for a guy who wants to settle a score because he had his head down and got nailed with a clean check. He should have gotten 2 min for charging, 5 minutes for boarding and a game misconduct for that play. No idea if he received any penalties or not. - 1970vintage

Neither are statistics, numbers can be massaged to mean anything, until science has progressed to the point where it can definitively identify something as the main cause more than other factors, everything is anecdotal. |

My doctor told me the night I was rushed to the hospital and had a stint put in , if you smoke you are going to die. It doesn't get any simpler than that |

Holy Christ I'm not saying smoking does't cause cancer. I was just pointing it out the smoking does not always kill.
Obesity kills more than anything. |

Smoking not only can lead to Cancer, it leads to blocked arteries and Heart Disease. It doesn't kill everybody but it kills more than it needs to.

Are you allowed to through your helmet off prior to engaging, no, and the helmet does offer a small amount of protection. There is the instigator rule that acts as a deterrent. I'm sure there are other measures being contemplated.
I had no issue what so ever with the 2 fights last night. Even the commentator mentioned how those 2 fights took the flames and crowd out of the game, to me the purpose was achieved. |

You're right, I had forgotten the helmet rule, although I think that has more to do with protecting the players head from the ice.

I think the intention was for both, it's allowed to be pulled off during the fight, which doesn't help when falling to the ice. I remember Dorsett actually cradling a guys head as they both went down last year, admirable act. |
