I strongly disagree. I'm glad players like Sestito are gone from the league but all of these guys can play hockey as well as fight. Both fights were about sending a message and I believe the message was received. Hockey is a violent game and the physical nature of the sport helps attract more casual fans. Eliminate fighting and you will have more stick work and cheap shots which imo is more dangerous. - CanuckDon
Given how it often goes for goons after they are done with their careers, it is probably a good thing that part of the game is fading in to obscurity.
I don't think he has played , I think he is a student of the game and has watched it. I am curious to know if he has ever been nailed by a check and knows how it feels - VANTEL
Just for the record, Jay Feester has never played hockey. He literally doesn't know how to skate. We make fun of him all the time but the guy has a cup as a GM and has a decent track record drafting
I used to be a rough player when I played and it won games and championships. Essentially my job was erasing talent from the other team and I was good at it. Hit hard. But never 1 hockey fight, no one usually survived the hit enough to fight me. Point being that Darius is right, this wins games if used right. If you hurt them enough it either destroys their roster or slows them down and makes them hesitate. Can't win like that.
There's been examples mind you of teams and players when used badly where it hurt them too. Ben Eager comes to mind. - SMBDragon
There is a huge difference between using physicality to intimidate players and entering staged fights that do not deter anything. If Dorsett and Prust were intimidating hitters, they would be feared. Instead they are willing combatants which is nice but I don't see how that actually makes a team better or feared.

i'm not sure i agree. maybe i do, maybe i don't.
can you please post a video of you skating and doing some shooting drills so i know whether i should agree with you or not?
That was a very fun game to watch, definitely glad to see the team come out with some jump and put in a bunch of goals, it should help their confidence. ( feelings ?)
I thought Miller was outstanding considering some of the misplays in front of him. I hope he keeps it up and if he does, I will likely have to take back some of the mean things I said about him.
Thought McCann looked above his head early and was crushed a few times but he got better as the game went on.
Hutton can certainly pass the puck, right now it has been sexy to see those long breakout passes, hopefully they don't start turning into massive turnovers but regardless an exciting player to watch.
Bartkowsk continues to skate the puck very well out of danger area's but seems lost once he gets the puck to the offensive zone. Still very nice to have his mobility on the backend.
Thought Tanev is quickly becoming the #1 D. Last night he was very good as usual but also looked faster, stronger and more confident with the puck on his stick.

so do some fans who have never stepped on the ice. - anavar
In my opinion the biggest thing that fans that haven't played have trouble with is understanding the locker room dynamic and how important quality people are to have around.

And do you think not fighting is going to magically make them think, "Oh, they aren't responding, guess I'll stop." No, it'll encourage them and they'll keep going until there's pushback. Fighting them isn't going to stop it, but it will make them think twice especially if Prust and Dorsett follow it up with doing the same things on Monahan, Bennett, Gaudreau, Giordano and Hamilton that Ferland and Bollig were doing to our guys. - DariusKnight
It has already been shown over the past decade that fighting does not stop anything and does not make anyone think twice. The only thing that makes people think twice is their pocket book, and the only way to hit them in their pocket book is via large suspensions.

If you have an a$%hole in your office, this might not be too hard to understand.
With all the different roles and personalities, there has to many varied perspectives on the player experience.

See Raffi Torres, Jordan Tootoo, and others as example of how that doesn't do anything. If fighting goes, expect to see more players of Torres, Tootoo and their ilk causing havok and more and more serious injuries occuring.
To answer your questions, Yes, and Yes, and more importantly it shows your teammates that the guys on the bench getting hacked and wacked, that "you as a team" won't stand by and let it happen. Win or lose the fight.
Do you play hockey? Have you ever? I do, and if someone is running around being an idiot on the other team, our guys chat about it on the bench and eventually someone will step up and smoke the clown and take a penalty (no hit league). Often it settles the goon down, and pumps your team up. - moondawg
Ferland continued to run people after the fight. He took HUGE runs at guys throughout the game, especially in the 3rd. Took a couple massive runs at Hutton. So no, you are wrong.
It's cute that your example of how fighting holds players accountable doesn't actually involve fighting though!

i've often thought this as well.
it's not just getting the best players and putting them on the same team.
its completely necessary, the first fight was to send a message for the last playoff series (Dear little Ferland, stop effing around and acting like you're Tie Domi, Love Dorsett)
and the Prust fight was because the Canucks were asleep and needed to wake up, and boom whaddya know? they scored 2 goals and the momentum of the game completely shifted.

I guess that shows how much your opinion is worth. Why don't you tell that to Wade Belak's kids or Rick Rypien's parents.
