so, if a player steals the puck in the offensive zone and scores immediately on one shot

or

the player steals the puck, and the team generates 5 shots on net, possessing the puck for one minute in the offensive zone but doesn't score....

option 2 is the better thing to do for fancy stats, right?

Here’s a simple explanation of how each measurement works (at least I think):

Corsi = shots on goal + missed shots + blocked shots

Fenwick = shots on goal + missed shots

Basically, since they don't have the technology to measure actual possession time, shots and missed shots are used as a proxy for possession time. What I find kind of hilarious, is for a guy like Girardi, a negative Corsi event occurs when he blocks a shot.

how? how are you getting Boyle off the team?

he has a no movement clause which prohibits being sent to the minors, a no trade clause as well

if he retired the cap hit stays anyway, they literally can do nothing except healthy scratch Boyle and pray he demands a trade

- jimbro83

Bingo

Or just ask him for a list he'd be willing to waive to without needing to embarrass the poop out of him. He's a professional. He knows he's not a fit here. He might be willing to waive to go to another contender.

this helps explain why Dan Boyle had far superior Corsi stats to Dan Girardi last year

Dan Boyle blocked 79 shots
Dan Girardi blocked 184 shots

And Dan Girardi is usually on the ice against Malkin, Crosby, Ovechkin, Stamkos, etc. etc. etc. Jeez, I can imagine why his Corsi would be lower playing against those guys, rather than be protected on the third pair.

Also, I wonder whether the Rangers are really that interested in winning the Corsi battle when they are protecting leads in the third. Come on boys, get your Corsi up and throw some pucks at the net.

Rangers corsi will never be good because they are a great transition team that also knows how to defend, without the puck, better than any other team in the NHL.

yep, and every time Patrick Kane or Ryan Johansen were on the ice in the first three games, Dan Girardi went out there, and yeah, he made some mistakes.

Put him out there tonight only against Adam Lowry and his fancy stats will go through the roof

Is Boyle the worst D man on the team? Sure yea I can buy that. But the season is 3 games old and i have seen a lot worse starts to the season with other players. No matter what he is on the cap this year and he played his best during the playoffs. So I am all for keeping him for depth reasons.

They need to create an NHL award for best Corsi of the season. Maybe that will help quiet them down knowing they can focus on that haha

Of course they will, which is why judging Dan Girardi by Corsi is just stupid.

It's a tool, and there are other variables that need to be taken into account in judging it's utility with respect to certain players.

Yep 100%

The season is to long and after what happened last year with Hank and Zucc you just never know what can happen next. Always nice to have depth

the situation with Boyle is intensified IMO because apparently Diaz has said they will give Hartford only one month or go back to Europe

I agree that depth is good, but if they could find a miracle trade to get rid of Boyle this would be a good time

That's the thing, I don't see a team trading for him. But like you say if a better alternative came around I am all ears. Just that if he is on the cap, I am more then fine with him being here playing if need be.

I think he has some trade value. He only has 1 year remaining on his contract and he does add offense and hey, he has good corsi......

ESPN ultimate North American professional sports team rankings. We already knew that their tickets were outrageously high priced but only Vancouver is pricier to watch live in the NHL.

Glass and mcilrath dressed for tn? Winnipeg can be a dirty team, remember that chop to the back of miller's neck last year?

mcllrath needs to show he can play, imo.

get physical, play sound d, and control the crease around hank and dump anyone who gets near him.

show the coaching staff (like he did in preseason) that you can play. spending 5 minutes at a clip in the box isnt going to do anyone good. that what glass is for.

He is just so bad though. It's well deserved.

He loses literally every single battle along the boards and gets destroyed by any forward with speed. Which in today's NHL is a lot of forwards.

Exactly, you wouldn't use a hammer to paint a wall. Certain tools do certain things. You need the whole tool box to build a house. That's why the eye test, in my opinion, is the only means of evaluating a player. Sure, the fancy stats are nice and helpful, but there's a reason why organizations send scouts to the youth programs and not statisticians.

I think this settles the advance stats debate
