Mike Smith has carried over his play from the last quarter of last season with a team that actually has added a ton of talent. Adding Duclair, Domi, Boedker, Vermette, Michalek and Hanzal is no small influx of skill. Not to mention all the players who did have to slog through that injury plagued season last year got valuable experience and can play proper minutes now. They aren't going to be nearly the dumpster fire everyone thought.

I wondered why we did not just try to resign him in offseason (after trade, getting Eichel was most important)? His contract is nothing, $1.625M / year for 2 years.

I guess he wanted to commit to "starter" and let him grow into it, but I think just letting the hot goalie play (sometimes for longer stretches) brings out the best in both.

He was mad because of the rumor that he was moved so that we would be worse. He made it perfectly clear to the media that he thought that was ridiculous. I really doubt he would have resigned here even if they wanted him to.

Because we already have too many guys when you take into account that we have 3 guys that should be in Rochester right now (Lieuwen, Makarov, Ullmark). If they sign Lindback, make the Lehner trade, and still have Johnson, what do you do with 6 goaltenders?
