I lean that direction, as well -- it's the salary cap era, yes, and asset management is always a crucial aspect of operation.
But at the same time, at some point, a franchise reaches that junction of having enough youth and organizational depth/picks combined with future salary obligations of pending free agents.
In a salary cap era, sometimes, you just can't keep everyone, and the NHL roster is better served by having veterans help you win, play out their contracts, and then depart, freeing up their salary slot and roster position.
The Jets are a better team right now with Byfuglien than without. They have Myers and Trouba who continue to develop.
At some point, Byfuglien has to get cut loose. And as Bill Walsh so correctly noted, sometimes a year too soon is better than a year too late.

truth be told, i really am laid back or "mild" in my demeanor most of the time. few things bring about rage anywhere near the way hockey does for me. i've significantly mellowed, even in just the last 5 years, which coincides with the arrival of my children. which is probably good for all of us. they actually watched most of the game with me last night for the first time. they were engaged. asking very basic questions, like "daddy, are you STILL happy?". this was from my son, as the game was winding down and the flyers clinging to a 2-0 lead. it was so innocent and really a wonderful experience. they've been to games before, but they were much younger then and have no memory of it. so they are at a point of finally "watching" the game. it's cool. and brings me way back to my own beginning, although i was a little older than my eldest so i had a better grasp of what i was watching.
They did and a couple idiots took it even further, parading around MSG in Flyers #31 jerseys with "Dead" on the nameplate rather than Lindbergh. - bmeltzer
My hatred for all things NY Rangers knows no limits. They have, without a doubt, the most classless fans in the league. They make me sick.

Dude. Take a couple hours out of your day and rent it or whatever. It's my anytime go-to. Dennis Farina and Joey Pants are awesome in it. Yaphet Kotto and John Ashton, too.
