They are one of Canada's great all time soft rock bands and Canadians for some reason hate them. I celebrate greatness and love their music. Every single song they put out is a hit, pretty hard to do that. - Scooby_Doo

It's actually easier to do than you think in todays' musical world as the masses are totally succeptable to repitition in the music industry. I'm not sure how releasing (basically) the same song 20 times over comes into the 'greatness' category...just changing a few chords here and there and keeping pretty much the same lyrics.
Thing is it's not about 'hate'...it's about respect. Nickelback are what's referred to as a 'sellout'. Basically catering completely to the radio-orientated genre of repetition and sacrificing relatively all integrity to satisfy what's left of the music industries 'standards'. Until that changes the 'hate' moniker will stick.
Now I'm not saying the band doesn't have talent...they do. That much is clear. But instead of satisfying the radio world with repetition why can't they write an ACTUAL rock/heavy metal album that doesn't cater to the mass radio sound?
I actually think they could do it and it would have the makings to be very good. No, no one is going to repeat Ride the Lightning or master of Puppets but still...an effort in this regard to Nickelbacks 'music' from Nickelback themselves, may help shed that 'hate' moniker you refer to.

ZZ top did the same thing with Eliminator and Afterburner, recorded at the same time with the same producer just released 2 years apart to milk the audience.
