AMac for Hartnell. Torts gets a goddamn shotblocker and Hartnell... I don't know what. But ....Hartnell. - hereticpride
That'd have to be a three-way trade, somehow -- Hextall flipped Hartnell, told him he was done in Philadelphia. That's not going away |

he is still under contract with Vancouver and they if they choose too could assign him a job within the organization as he is still an employee no? - rinaldo
If they chose to assign him to a different spot within the organization it's one thing. But firing a coach and not doing so (which I imagine is the case 99% of the time), should not require compensation. You were forced to fire a coach for one reason or another before his contract was up, you should not benefit from that in any way.
I look at it similarly to buying out a player's contract. In no way should the Flyers get compensation from Edmonton the second they sign Bryz after the Flyers bought him out. The Flyers made a mistake with a bad signing, bought him out, both parties move on unattached to each other outside of the Flyers paying Bryz nearly as long as the Mets are paying Bonilla.
Now I know firing a coach in the middle of his contract and buying out a player's contract are 2 different things legally (even though I view both as terminating a contract while still paying the party), but I don't see them all too differently. Signing a bought out player doesn't require compensation and neither should hiring a fired coach. |

The whole team has it out for Russell every time we face him and we're two seasons removed from the first time Rinaldo was thrown out of that game against Dallas. I tip my hat to White. We don't know what's being said or done out there but Gagner, Couturier and White all felt the need to let him know his BS is unacceptable.

I think White walked right into a dumb penalty last night. Roussel is a punk and wouldn't fight someone that might actually hurt him. |

Totally agree, especially with that first paragraph -- ridiculous. Because they are benefiting by no longer paying that coach |

I saw someone on twitter mention that Torts should hire Berube as an Assistant coach.
That would make Hartnell's head explode. - johndewar
oh my god, please let this happen
EDIT: and then somehow manage to trade VLC to CLB |

he took Roussel to the box with him though, right? That's a good play in my book, get him off the ice so the team can focus. |

and took an extra two minutes too. so, no, not a great play, considering the Flyers became shorthanded as a result. |

I think calculation of the salary cap is part of the CBA with the NHLPA.....of which, the coaches (and scouts) are not members. - johndewar
Right, but requiring player-based compensation for a non-player position seems wrong. |

I take the simplistic approach. He is still employed by the canucks no matter how you look at it.
Bryz was no longer on the team. He had no contract so cant require compensation.

he still had years remaining on his contract. so they still can employ him if they desired.
now if they worked out a settlement and he got a lump sum and the contract was voided, then no compensation. |

I thought Brayden Schenn's ice time last night was bizarre
If you look at the last two games, two games ago Matt Read's ice time was low when he played with Scott Laughton, and last night Schenn's was low when he played with Laughton
And again, as bizarre as it sounds but I give credit when it's due: Neither of those players deserved to have their ice time cut, and Laughton, while young, shouldn't have his ice time that low, either
I am not killing the coach, five games in. And I don't know exactly what metrics he uses to determine good play, and it's clear that his actual checking line is the fourth line. We can all see that from how he deploys them
But this thing with Laughton's linemates is concerning, because I feel this way about Brayden Schenn: I don't love the guy. But it's easy to see why his defenders believe that he doesn't always get the fairest shake, other than favorable zone starts
From the way Read and Schenn started the season, neither of them deserved to have their ice times low in the games that they were low, IMO - AllInForFlyers
Props to you for your comments here. You've definitely been a little harsh on Schenn at times but I think this a pretty fair, level-headed POV. I'm a supporter of sorts. I'm not ready to say that he's part of the long-term core yet. But he realistically needs a fair chance to show that he can be.
As I said yesterday, I'd rather see him and Gagner with Couts for a couple of games. I'd be ok as well with a Read - Couturier - Schenn line. I'd be ok with trying Schenn at center for a couple of games and giving Laughton a break, especially with the minutes Laughton getting.
It's too early to question if the GM and coach are on the same page. But I really don't know what they're trying to do either.

I get how it works, I just think it's stupid to call him fired if he's really not. He's just not the coach anymore. I think the contracts should be structure where if you get fired, you are no longer a part of the org. Just like most other jobs. Another team shouldn't have to pay anything to hire a guy that another team "fired". |

Yes and White walked right into it. White was lucky he didn't get an unsportsmanlike penalty as well. Once he saw he got the extra two, he threw a little fit in the box. |
