I just remember his interview when a reporter asked Linden if he's ever fired anyone before. I dint think Benning was hired yet? - LeftCoaster
You are correct. Torts was fired by Linden before Benning was hired.

Bennning wasn't hired yet. Trevor fired Torts. Whether or not Benning and the Canucks were deciding things begind the scenes before he was officially hired who knows.
Edit: never mind, literally everyone beat me to it. |

I think Torts has been the new Keenan for a few years now. Teams don't play for their coach so the GM brings in Torts just to show these touchy feelies just how brutal it can be with a hard nosed wiener like Torts/Keenan. In a year he'll be gone and the players will be eager to play for his replacement. - boonerbuck
I played for Norm Johnson, Rick Wilson and went to camp with Terry Simpson...today's kids get no sympathy from me lol. |

Except FA and Gillis hired Torts for 5 years and the Blue Jackets players are likely the furthest thing from touchy feelies....
This is what makes this hiring so crazy to me. Torts is a guy known for getting teams to play a gritty lunch bucket style. Columbus already play that way, the problem is they have had absolutely brutal goal tending from a guy who has been on of the most consistent over the past few years.
What's that saying ?
Show me a good coach and I'll show you a good goalie? - belcherbd
Not many coaches would sign a lame duck contract.

So the super credible Botchford insisted even though FA, MG and Torts all confirmed it was Gillis. - boonerbuck
Never let the truth get in the way of a good discussion.
That hiring still doesn't make any sense to me, regardless of who made the final decision. Like you said with drafting, can't understand some of the picks.. |

Cedarholm assigned to the ECHL Vantel, isn't that your guy? - LeftCoaster
Not really, I said a year ago he could be a decent stay at home D when he was on Portland. I do that with lots of guys . |

Same here. Thats why I'm always laughing at the crowd that thinks every time a young player gets scratched or is a victim of the bench being shortened it's punishment and to take it one silly step further... think every kid should receive the exact same so called "punishment" as the other regardless of the circumstances of the moment like this kids feeling are far more important than winning the game or making the playoffs.

I laughed my ass off when they hired Torts. Like I said then and recently... I didnt need to see the results to know that Torts was a disaster waiting to happen... his glory days were in a different century... he's a useless headcase now... Torts was just being Torts... no surprises.

I swore like a trucker when he was hired. It was the shltty cherry on top of the disfunctional sundae that the Canucks were at that point. |

I wasn't surprised he was a disaster, as I and I know many others thought it was mistake when it happened.
Some of the stuff that came out afterwards was genuinely crazy. Not being at practices, never having a a conversation with burrows etc. |

I was just thinking of the exit interviews or news conference where he sat there and was being particularly reflective on the season and the need to change the core and the lack of organizational depth...
There was some truth to his words, but I can't remember him admitting or regretting any of his decisions. ..
It would be nice to hear he has learned and moved on, but it might be even more entertaining to see the the old Torts in Columbus putting on a show (train wreck) for all to see. |

Some of the info that came out was ridiculous and stuff no successful coach would ever do. |

All indications are he's an extremely intelligent hockey guy, subjective opinion, however, his communication methods are so old-school and he's a hot-headed Italian. |

It's like he thought that his only issue was the way that he conducted himself with the media, and he was better at that while he was here, but clearly it wasn't his only issue.
I'm with Marwood, I fckn hate that guy. |

Yep.
I remember trying to keep an open mind and hoping for the best but really expecting the worst.
I think he sees himself as a communicator and motivator, and plays it like some sort of hollywood role in front of the lights and cameras, but his message or script is an old, out dated story that you might listen to for a moment or two and then realize it is all bs... like the wrestling video posted the other day, no such thing as a wrestler for the intelligent wrestling fan...
When he was reaming out Edler and others, it wasn't so much how the message was received by the player, it was more important that it was delivered right there and then, spitting and sticking his finger in the players face. |
