All indications are he's an extremely intelligent hockey guy, subjective opinion, however, his communication methods are so old-school and he's a hot-headed Italian. - LeftCoaster
All I want to know is when is the next time the Flames play the Blue Jackets?
Thursday January 21st. Over/Under on if Torts even makes it to that game? |

Wonder if Torts tries to choke Willie in the hallway when they play...wait, that sounds kinda dirty |

I was just thinking of the exit interviews or news conference where he sat there and was being particularly reflective on the season and the need to change the core and the lack of organizational depth...
There was some truth to his words, but I can't remember him admitting or regretting any of his decisions. ..
It would be nice to hear he has learned and moved on, but it might be even more entertaining to see the the old Torts in Columbus putting on a show (train wreck) for all to see. - hillbillydeluxe
Torts took a playoff team and turned it into a top 10 pick team... the only skip in our playoff run for most of a decade....

Don't get me wrong I'm stoked that the nucks ( Benning) was able to recoup a 2nd round pick out of Columbus hiring torts, but by agreeing to pay part of his salary doesn't that sound like we are buying a pick?
I could see a situation where rich teams would be able to help poor teams shed some cash in return for a pick. |

That's not new though. Look no further than the Horton/Clarkson deal. The Leafs weren't buying picks but they were buying their way through a loophole in the CBA.
In this case it isn't even a loophole, it just dropped in Benning's lap. |

My mind is blown. - Carol Schram
Mine also. It is utterly inconceivable that Torts is coaching in the NHL again. Fired after one year for gross incompetence and the Jackets hire him to turn around there team.
Surely, there is some untapped potential out there in the AHL or KHL or junior or pee-wee or beer leagues that can do a better job than Torts. Having the back up goalie coach the team seems preferable.
This is sweeter than getting a 2nd rounder for Crawford! And then another for Potvin. |

He broke Edler and he wanted to buy out Burrows. The Sedins had their worse seasons in forever. The guy is useless. |

Sure and I didn't like that either or the Pronger trade this off season. The buying of picks would be new though, while that can be accomplished with a player trade, there are cap and roster limit implications involved, not so much with mgmt.

I think Torts has been the new Keenan for a few years now. Teams don't play for their coach so the GM brings in Torts just to show these touchy feelies just how brutal it can be with a hard nosed wiener like Torts/Keenan. In a year he'll be gone and the players will be eager to play for his replacement. - boonerbuck
Exactly my thoughts. |

I thought he was a terrible fit with Van when he was hired...we were a mature team that had gone deep in the playoffs, we didn't need a butt-kicker.
CBJ on the other hand??
never really had much playoff success, lots of young players...i'm just saying, maybe he'll have more success there.
Can't do much worse i guess.
Useless though? I'm not so sure. Team USA doesn't think so. |

Babcock only cost a 3rd |

No video review, doesn't coach the skate... The guy is a relic. He thinks yelling and deriding his players is going to motivate them, but nobody is raised on that anymore. It breeds resentment, rebellion and under performance. |

They owed Torts $2.5 mil per year. Now they are only on the hook for the portion of that above and beyond what Columbus is paying him. They are saving money, not buying anything.
It's like a few years back when Corey Schwabb was bought out by the Leafs and signed in Vancouver. The Canucks paid him league minimum, but he still received $1.5 mil total with the Leafs picking up the remainder. |

Assistants can do that stuff.
He's not meant to be there for the long term or 'breed' anything.
He's meant to get quick short term results ala Hitchcock, Tippett, etc.
I can't believe i'm defending Torts, better state right now that i don't really give a turd about Torts or CBJ...i just don't think the hiring is all that baffling. |

He also seems to understand the game and have their respect and get results, so clearly there is a fair difference in case study there. |

Hard to abuse it though... not like a team will stock pile former coaches so they can buy picks.
