If only the trade was Sutter for Bonino straight up. Don't forget the 2nd round pick, Adam Clendening, and the ability to sign Eric Fehr. I agree it is way too early to say we were fleeced... - Mino42
Not too late I say we were not fleeced lol |

Really????
Somehow we get a 2nd rounder for the most moronic coaching hire in franchise history (RIP Mr. Laforge).
How does that even happen? I know the Canucks still were paying for the most lazy, unprofessional, unstable and irrelevant coach ever due to Gillis's last gasp of air trying to salvage his own career...
How does this happen? It is negotiated or is it some sort of rule? Are the Canucks still paying him?
WTF WTF WTF??? |

Read some of the comments in the Lawless article I linked above, more informative than the article itself... The rule was introduced to stop teams from poaching the staff of other organizations. Someone even said Toronto gave up a 3rd rounder even when Babcock wasn't under salary or something...
What is wrong with having a former coach, who is still under contract, as the property of a team? he is the team's asset if he is still under contract whether he is with the team or not.
I think it is great we are getting a 2nd for him. |

It's great for us, but it's also ridiculous. |

If moron Torts is worth a second rounder.... then moron Gillis must be worth Lemieux circa 1986. Trade Gillis! Toronto I am looking at you.... |

Do you think TSN would be against the compensation if it was Carlyle that had been signed and the Leafs were getting a 2nd round pick? - A_SteamingLombardi
Of course they would be. The headline would read: "Leafs Get Screwed Out of a First." |

Other teams have been compensated in the past.
It is an NHL policy
Don't feel guilt when something good happens just because we get shat on so often...
Think of the Bobby Lu rule, contract was approved by the nhl, it was an acceptable practice until the cba changed and then we get screwed... that is ridiculous...
Torts was still under contract, I guess Vancouver could have told CBJ to feck off, we are not releasing Torts so he can go help a rival club ( )
It is better than great, it is awesome. |

I don't know if this is true, but I found this in the comment section of the TSN article:
Jimjamg
There is definitely a bizarre double-standard going on here. No one in the media said boo when Detroit benefitted from the rule getting Toronto's 3rd round pick, even though Babcock's contract had expired with Detroit and he was a complete free agent, compared to Torts who is on a three year guaranteed contract still in place with the Canucks. It makes a lot more sense that the Canucks should get a pick than Detroit, but why did the media not complain then. Hmmmm?
Maybe it was to talk to Babs before his contract actually expired.
there wan't much of an uproar when the Leafs traded Clarkson for Horton. Lots of ridiculous rules and policies. feckem all. |

Don't get me wrong I'm stoked that the nucks ( Benning) was able to recoup a 2nd round pick out of Columbus hiring torts, but by agreeing to pay part of his salary doesn't that sound like we are buying a pick?
I could see a situation where rich teams would be able to help poor teams shed some cash in return for a pick. - belcherbd

It's 30 billionaires, they will do what ever they want. - A_SteamingLombardi
Its a business, it's a hobby, it's a plaything for those 30 billionaires, it is not about the integrity of the game, it is about whatever they want to make it about.
I have no skin in the game beyond the few trinkets I buy and the time invested to watch and post here. I guess I shouldn't be surprised with the double standards of the media and the league. |

The strange part is that the nux are paying part of the salary?
If clb wants torts, sure but why would van paying a portion of his salary.
It makes it seem like van needed to compensate clb for hiring our guy?
Again I don't have an issue with this situation, it just seems strange.

It is a little strange, how it all went down, saw this tweet too,

You can & would think CBJ GM would call 1st to say we want to interview......but only if you will take less than 2nd
So if Brian Lawton thinks they could have negotiated on which pick, why not negotiate salary?
I wonder if the Canucks could have told CBJ they weren't allowed to talk to Torts unless they were compensated before hand? It all sounds a little loosey goosey.
but happy with the result. |

I think it's stupid. The compensation should be that the Canucks no longer are required to pay him. Why should a team receive compensation in the form of a draft pick for someone that wasn't a player. |

Irrelevant if u think its a stupid rule.
Its a rule n fairly commonplace.
CBJ chose knowingly.
Take it up with the BOG. |
