I think it's stupid. The compensation should be that the Canucks no longer are required to pay him. Why should a team receive compensation in the form of a draft pick for someone that wasn't a player. - 1970vintage
You should lobby the Canucks to return the pick to rectify this ridiculous situation. |

You can & would think CBJ GM would call 1st to say we want to interview......but only if you will take less than 2nd
So if Brian Lawton thinks they could have negotiated on which pick, why not negotiate salary?
I wonder if the Canucks could have told CBJ they weren't allowed to talk to Torts unless they were compensated before hand? It all sounds a little loosey goosey.
but happy with the result. - hillbillydeluxe
League rules are a 2nd for a coach mid season a third if during off season. I don't see how there could be room to negotiate picks. The only thing I could think of is that the nucks said we will cover X salary if the pick is for 2016, etc.
You have to think some negotiation took place if the canucks are paying part of the salary. |

Already taken care of. JB has agreed to return the 2nd round pick, plus a 5th round pick for their trouble, Sbisa agreed to a 15 year extension which the BOG made a special exception for. |

I dunno. maybe, we want to take Torts off your hands but the 2nd is hard to swallow? maybe the CBJ said how about a 3rd? VAN, how about we p/u part of his salary?
Don't know what is said behind doors, but in the past it hasn't been the most reputable league... Boots whoever as an owner, Pronger working for the league... strikes because gm's keep fecking everything up. |

The Oilers won, the Blue Jays won, everything is alright in Canada again, even if the Red Wings are holding all the cards. |

My point was the league rule is a 2nd for a coach during the season so CLB couldn't offer a third.

Those are good points.
I understand that they actually wanted Boucher but he is tied up in Europe with a no escape clause so this sounds pretty high of a price to get a coach who acted like he was Kassian's... umm... friend.

my point was I don't trust the league when it comes to stuff like this. I am happy we got the second and don't think it is that big a deal that FA is on the hook for some of the salary this season, if Torts wasn't going to CBJ, he'd be getting paid anyway, no biggie.
But seeing that tweet by Brian Lawton, who was a gm or something at one point in the league, might be an agent or something now, makes you wonder if the rule book or league policies are negotiable ?

Maybe the Canucks are picking up part of his salary this year because Torts is joining CBJ 7 games into the season. We don't know how much the Canucks are paying so everything is speculation on our part (which has never stopped us before) none of us know the inside rules for this league. |

Compensation for head office and coaching personnel came about because teams like Detroit were becoming farm teams for the rest of the league.
Detroit and others were tired of it. It's a good rule cuz some teams were denying the ability for some folks to interview with other teams for open positions. This way a team knows it'll receive compensation for developing front office talent... |

I don't care that Canucks are paying Torts, not my money. I do care that we are getting a draft pick.
NHL CBA rules are Swiss Cheese. Loopholes everywhere. Look at Mike Richards Pronger Horton and NJD . No surprise they make up the rules on the fly, they always do.
This time it benefits the Canucks , so I am happy |

Then he would have locked up that 1st pick with an NTC prior to playing in the league...Gillis sure was shrewd... |
