Early in the season this is as must win as it gets! Varly has to be solid (for the Avs and my fantasy team). Would be great to see Dutchy get on the board again as well. I'm expecting a big game from the Avs tonight. As long as they come out with the same compete level they do against top teams they should get the W.

The sky may officially crash land on Saturday if the Avs are the lone ranger to finally play terrible enough to give Columbus a win.

You can just see it happening.

You really can. I can't exactly put my finger on why this team is off to another terrible start.

Players? Dutchy needs to perform
Line chemistry? Meh...not sure
No O'Reilly? He didn't help with our slow start last year
New acquisitions? Beauchemin seems to be solid
Coaching? Easy to point a finger and blame him but who knows?
BINGO!

That was awful.

I was impressed by how Canes completed a full line change while in the oppositions zone, tired them out and then drove the net against a tired team.

Canes seemed able to get some favourable match-ups last night. Staal line was out against Colorado's 4th quite often. Wonder if that's happening more frequently than one would like.

Also the Canes bigger forwards seemed to be able to handle the Avs D with relative ease in their own end. That's... not great.

That was by design, Roy loves his 4th line, he has no issue rolling them against top lines. Its going to be the death of this team, his blind stubbornness to play his players in the best situations to succeed.

Example, Mitchell should not be on a PP when you have offensively gifted players in Rantanen and Grigo just sitting and watching.

And Roys love of with his D is another big issue. Nick Holden was leading icetime out of all Dmen going into the 3rd. Even strength and PP. EJ, Beauch, and Zads should all be eclipsing him in ice time, yet he keeps on sending him out there.

Roy needs to do a better job at managing his bench, it really is a concern with this team

I really thought last night was close to must-win territory and after watching the first period I thought we had it. For once I thought we might actually just thump a team to be honest. It just never comes easy for these guys, and i'm growing tired of the whole "monkey off my back" thing with Duchene. Why is the monkey always on your back? lol

They got the loser point so it's no all that bad, it just makes Saturday more important. We all know what happens when you fall behind in the Western conference. There's no room to have a crappy week let alone a slow month. We just aren't good enough to recover, need more consistency.

Funny you mention Mitchell on the PP. I noticed more than once last night that it looked as they were confused by how many Centers were on the ice. It almost felt like they were getting in each others way.

that unit of Duchene, Soderberg, Mitchell was a mess on the PP.
It just is mind bogglign sometimes. You have a stud big body in Rantanen who had a great period of hockey with Duchene, and one the PPs hit you make him sit in watch to "reward" mitchell who had a few goals to start the season.

More of play your best players in situations for them to succeed. Avs dont gain anything long term to have their under 23 players sit and watch when 30 something UFA signings depth guys take prime time away from them.

Even Gormley, why wasnt he getting PP time in Barries spot. Holden is not the answer patrick no matter how hard you try to shove that down our throats.

I get its early, but man this is going to be an annoying story line going forward if Roy doesnt start to managing his bench better. He has all the horses he needs to succeed, but refusing to play them makes you want to stop caring abotu this season already

It sure seemed that way. Holden REALLY struggled under pressure. I was surprised to see him on the ice as much as he was, especially when the other D pairings seemed to be doing a much better job of transitioning the puck.

Welcome to being an Avs Fan. Roy has his favorites, and they are some of the worst playres on the team, so he puts them in prime positions over some of his young studs. He really is a reward his vets kind of coach and I think its stubbornness that he wont be proven wrong by going to bat for them, hes determined to make them work and prove the NHL wrong.

McLeod being the 6th attacker, Mitchell getting prime PP minutes, Guenin playing Top 4, Holden TOI leader multiple games already.

Its like he is stuck in 2013 when looking at those guys who played way over their heads and had career years that they will never come close to matching ever again. He needs to move on and adapt but really struggles when it comes to trusting new players

Sounds about right. I just kept watching the game going "Why are the Canes getting matchups like this?" It was E.Staal or Rask out vs Holden for probably half the friggen game. It wasn't so bad in the first two periods when Duchene et al. clearly had the jump on the struggling Canes defense (who kept taking penalties, but by the third when things were going 5-on-5 it was starting to get kind of ugly.

Not trying to be an Armchair GM or pretend like im an NHL coach, but im not the only one who sees that from the Avalanche Fanbase perspective.

Roy is an average NHL coach, good motivator and players coach with the way he always supports his guys in the media, but it seems like this is the max he will be able to take them, a bubble and inconsistent team.

very frustration to watch since when you look at that roster, it seems like there are all the pieces needed to be a real thorn in the side for the central division and push a playoff spot. Just doesnt seem like they will consistently play up to their potential with Roy unless he is willing to change his style

That's exactly the line I was watching. Soderberg and Mitchell both went to the same spot trying to get a pass from Duchene. Just a sloppy mess.

When a period has no flow, and your line combos look better than your PP.......why doesn't he just throw out the regular line combos on the PP? Makes way more sense than bunching up three guys that are never on the ice together.

And the fact t hat all 3 are Left hand shots who have been LW/Cs only, make no sense.
Iggy, Mack, playing on the same unit as Right hand shots, and keeping Mikko a lefty but plays RW on the bench.

Its more to the point of putting your players in the right position to succeed. Why force Soderberg or Mitchell to play RW when they have no clue what they are doing even on the PP.

However, after all this line mess, I am really pleased in Rantanen, he will come along slowly. Zads is such a beast, I am not getting disappointed if he doesnt throw a big hit every shift, im so used to them now and Grigorenko is looking better and better every game. He needs to be in the Top 9 already. The horses are there, just need to get those lines set and let them work on building off proper chemistry
