The hit showed me two things about Rinaldo we already knew. 1) that he is a barely functioning idiot when on the ice. Risking that type of hit shows an utter lack of common sense.
2)It shows his utter lack of respect for other players, both on his team and on the opposing team. - MBFlyerfan
His "I thought he still had the puck" line was crap, too. Just means he was on a mission.
It's like getting stopped for running a red light and saying, "It was yellow the last time I looked at it."

The hit reminds me of the Burrows hit on McDonagh from 2 years back. The legality of the hit can be debated to an extent. However, the hit was dirty and the only thing he had in mind was to "blow up" the player without any worries about the health of the player.
As for Giroux..I love the people that question his heart or ability to be a captain..How many games over the past 5 years has he shown an ability to elevate when he has either played poorly or it was needed. - opeth_pa
I don't understand that. On the ice, he does all the little things you'd want out of your captain (plays the PK, wins faceoffs, goes into the tough areas) in addition to being (arguably) your best player. He is the engine on one of the best power plays in the sport over the past 3 or so years. He seems to comport himself well during interviews.

Did anyone else recall Rinaldo running Couturier in Flyers prospect camp years ago? Or am I the only person? I mentioned that to my boss (Flyers STH) yesterday.
Rinaldo's hit and target were unsurprising. - Flyskippy
Sorry. He holds no importance unless he's an HB season ticket holder

The coach clearly trusts Schultz and Streit the most. They have gotten by far the hardest matchups. Medvedev and Schenn have got the easiest matchups, and Schenn was healthy scratched three times. The idea they would suddenly move to the top pairing is very unrealistic.
I think they'd be better off balancing out the minutes between the defenseman. Clearly Streit and Schultz aren't capable of handling shutdown pair matchups.
If Schultz gets rough usage and produces bad results, it doesn't make him any better than the others. It's like the Amac effect on the Islanders

Gagner, who tallied the Flyers' second goal, was originally slated to be a healthy scratch. - Bill Meltzer
Yeah, that sure worked out for the better, didn't it?
From what I've seen, Gagner has been good, and it seems like he's paying a lot of attention to details away from the puck. He's even taking it upon himself to play more physically.
For the life of me, I'll never understand the love that coaches have for 4th-line plugs. I get that they're set if/forget it, and they bring energy and stuff, but jesus... what's it going to take to knock either of White or VDV out of the lineup?

Good stuff seems to happen with Gagner out there. I'd like to see him stay in the lineup and if Couturier or Schenn are out for any length of time, he'll be out there.

See, that's a loaded question. Because that is the checking line right now.
I don't have an issue with replacing players due to performance. Go for it. But for numerous stretches last night and other nights, the fourth line has been the one line that has been putting in the work rate that this team needs to show, all while getting punishing zome starts.
Again, I get it: They are replacement level players. The problem is that the Flyers can't shelter everybody -- the coach clearly doesn't want to give Laughton those minutes, we don't want Couturier eating those minutes, and Gagner can't eat those minutes.
Gagner has been working harder than I have seen him, and that's great. But the coach was going to make him a healthy scratch because with this lineup the way it is, he can't hide everyone. We like Gagner until he starts getting caved in -- and if he was in the fourth line getting those zone starts, that is what would happen
