You've said this a couple times now. The last 2 years have been laughable but right now we are doing very well in limiting shots and scoring chances, very well in getting pucks out of our zone, and goals against is improved. Teams aren't dominating zone time (opponents are not getting off multiple line changes while our team is stuck flailing away in our end) like before. I see some very positive things and it stems from better play by the D men and way better backchecking from the forwards. Pysyk ands McCabe are our most solid pair lately.
Bashing Weber is easy but it will be a better day for the team when he is #7 or mentoring the guys in Rochester. - LandlordTom
The last two years we were trying to lose, we had pysyk in rochester last year when he was better than most we had playing here.
Any and all comparisons of this year to last year are simply pointless.
we have no true top line dmen. Risto is a nice player and will develop into a top line player, but on a team not hurting for defense he would not be pushed so early in his career to play a top line role. Bogosian is not a top line d man. Pysyk and McCabe look promising and should develop into nice players in the 3-5 range. Gorges is getting older and is a marginal second line dman. All together this is not a defense that could win a playoff series which is the goal.
Maybe calling them a joke is harsh, I should rather say they are a poor defense with no depth. And we only have one prospect with a reaonable chance of making the NHL, Guhle.

The hypocrisy is off the charts around here.
You guys and girls compare this team to a team built to tank last year where we were trading away goalies for almost nothing because they were good and dared to win games. Starting players who aren't even in the league this year, and not because they retired. Having players who could have helped stay in rochester to shelter them from the bullspit. A team without Eichel and Reinhart and Pysyk and McCabe who have been four of our best players. You can't compare anything to last year when the team was not meant to be competitive and expect me to believe it means progress. The only progress we have made has been in the entertainment department and that is due to Eichel and Reinhart and not because of Kane or O'Reilly or Lehner or Bogosian.
If you are honest the only bright spots have been our draft picks, the trade acquisitions have not been any more entertaining that Stafford or Stewart were last year. That's the truth.
Someone on here argued that the Kane trade is justified because we needed to get rid of players to tank. He said something along the lines of I would rather have Eichel and Kane than Myers and Strohm. For some reason, when I say something like, we only have a few good prospects that had realistic expectations to make the NHL, I get asked to provide my crystal ball. But no one ever asked him for his. But I guess he is right. Myers, who according to many here is terrible, would definitely helped us win more games, and we might have ended up in third last, and we know how bad that ended up for Edmonton.
Others argue that it is too small of a sample for any evaluation of the players we traded for. That the stats that show them not producing caan not be used. But then every stat that you handpick to try to show how great this team is going to be and how much better we are than a team that was built to tank last year, those stats are all perfectly fine to use. After all, look at how few shots we give up. Look at our possesion numbers and scoring chances, but don't pay attention to goals scored or wins and losses. Goals scored? Wins and losses? Those stats aren't nearly as important and its only six games.
I am sick of the comparisons to last years team already. As if it means anything at all to be better or outperform a team whose purpose was to tank.
I think this team will eventually get better. When Eichel, Reinhart, Ristolainen, Pysyk, McCabe and Girgensons all mature we will have a nice core. But we will never be as good as we could have been. Our defense will be a problem for years. We have a very thin prospect pool, and very little depth especially on defense.
If you told me two years ago that our defensive prospect pool and depth was going to be a problem in two years, I would have laughed in your face. If you told me our prospect pool would be thin, with all the extra first and second round picks we had and so many good prospects, I would have called you crazy. But this is in fact that case. And all so we can add two overrated top six forwards with character issues and a goalie prospect with a major concussion history.
What you see is what you got folks. They will get better, but ousoutsideide of maybe a couple good third line power forwards, and an offensive defneseman, there are only longshot prospects. I hope you enjoy the new acquisitions, because we went all in on a bunch of question marks when we were set up to succeed. To me this seems unnecessarily risky. And I never thought O'Reilly or Kane were franchise players, but we payed for them as if they were.

You just do you
You're a piece of work really.
Armia was a bust and Lemieux is a bottom 6 player so talk about ALL those prospects we gave up where are they? Compher? Oh yeah that guy who has 3rd line center written all over him IF he even makes it to the show. Grigorenko? He's playing 6 minutes a night for his older junior coach...
The ONLY prospect that was given up that stings is Zadorov.
By the way if you want to talk about a prospect at least spell his name right. STROME...the guy who is in juniors right now.
Eichel is a FRANCHISE player Strome is not. Eichel is not here if that Kane trade isn't made.
So Kane and O'Reilly have only scored once big deal. It's 6 games in. If they only have 2 or 3 goals at game 20 then by all means come back here with your holier than thou, I know all attitude, until then actually watch the games and see how Kane has been the best forward on the ice.
An no we wouldn't have finished in 3rd last we would have finished in second last and turned into Arizona.
Oh wow Kane and O'Reilly are already generating chances...

Thanks for proving my point. There is no way at all to know what would have happened if the Kane trade were not made. But you make an unsupportable claim and expect it to be taken as fact. How do you know if we would have won more games? Maybe they would have done other things to ensure the tank. You can not know, but you still think you are right and anyone who disagrees is obviously wrong.
Furthermore, all the pieces we gave up, you conveniently forgot to mention all the draft picks, all the prospects we traded are off to bad start so they are all busts, but so what that Kane and O'Reilly are off to slow starts, its too soon to tell with them, not too soon to tell with the prospects we traded.
You exactly proved my point about the hypocrisy. Thanks
p.s. I don't care how you spell his name, the point wasn't who we got or where we finished, it was that you can make that assumption and use it as fact without being challenged because it supports the view of the collective. But anyone with a contradictory opinion is challenged for saying things that are much less of a stretch.
Seriously thanks, that was priceless. |

I agree with your premise. O'Reilly and Kane are not franchise players.
Hell, Nash cost around the same as Kane and Nash had a few 40 goal seasons under his belt. However, Kane and O'Reilly are young, top 6 players. I enjoy watching them |

You honestly need to apply as a blogger for the Sabres. Might even unseat Garf. We could use your analysis as another view of how this team really is in regards to how this team really stacks up vs the rest of the league. |
