Slava Voynov signs in Russia. Because of drugs & wife beating, Dean Lombardi managed to clear about $9-$10mm off his cap |

I'll just say that Schultz played 2 min 10 seconds away from Streit last game. That's not enough to determine anything. Streit also didn't have a good game. I'm basing my opinion on every game where they've been together 100/115 ES minutes. Also, that's a legitimate argument that their numbers will improve with a higher QoT in G's line versus Laughts's line. But since they're a pairing they both are affected in the same way. Using my eye, I see Schultz constantly fail to clear, lose skating battles to loose pucks, and conceding the blue line at an unhealthy rate with forward help. This isn't bucking any trends.
I've said enough on the subject. My point is clear. You win. - Mononoke
Stating that Schultz played 2 min 10 seconds away from Streit is ignoring who else he played with and for how long. Again, it's a team game. 5 skaters and a goalie on the ice in most cases, not to mention the opponents. I agree that Schultz has not played as well as he can, and that is certainly a big part of the equation, but so is how his linemates play, and how well they play. The important thing to know and understand, is when you look at Schultz CF%, that's not Schultz individual number, it's the result of what happens when Schultz is on the ice with his teammates. It's a team number, not an individual number. How much of a factor one individual is in that result, requires analysis. |

Hextall says he wants MacDonald back on the Flyers.
And the way it looks right now, MacDonald, who has three assists and a plus-3 rating in six games, isn't coming back to the NHL anytime soon. The Flyers, who gained $950,000 in cap relief when they sent MacDonald down, simply don't have the space to bring him back up.
"Quite frankly, we'd like to get him back up," said general manager Ron Hextall, who was in attendance Sunday. "It's a situation right now that's partly out of our hands and his hands.
"It's certainly not the way you script it. You don't want to have a guy making a ton of money here. That's not the way you plan things. Obviously, sometimes you have to adjust.
"This is not something that I want to do every year."

I have noticed that Mason has been leaker, with looser rebound control, thus far this season
I'm not concerned yet. It's eight games. But yeah, if he is more top 15 than top 6-9, yeah. - AllInForFlyers
Remember when Mason had a rough start last season too? Oh and Lundqvist starts slow almost every season. Lets reserve judgement. Because if we were using 8 games as barometer...Jake Voracek would be a below average winger and Giroux would be good enough to center the Hawks 3rd line. |

One of the biggest issues that's not good is why do we want MacDonald on the Phantoms taking away icetime from young players that need development, and icetime? Not a good situation all around. |

They also have Drewiske and Lashoff in the lineup right now so that's not an issue yet. Morin, Ghost and Alt are getting plenty of ice time. Hagg and Marti are out injured.

It always matters that it's a team game. That is always a factor. All of those shot attempts against are not all on Schultz. There is no way around that fact. Schultz in the right situation, can be a decent 2nd pair defender. He has not played as well as he can, and he shares in the culpability of the results when he's on the ice. Just because Streit is arguably the best defenseman on the team, doesn't mean he is capable of carrying any one player, whether it's a forward or a defenseman. Look at Schultz shot differential last night with different teammates. That tells you that is matters that it's a team game. Just look at the shot differentials when Streit/Schultz played with the Laughton line versus the Giroux line. - MJL
Schultz is the new fall guy......Always has to be someone. He's not a great D-man but he's reliable. He is playing against better competetion than he handle for 20 min a game but thats not his fault. |

I don't know how they are deploying players, but I would think a coach is he has them at their disposal, would tend to lean towards veterans in key situations. I don't know if that is happening or not, but I'd rather see the kids taking their lumps in those situations and growing at the AHL level. |

Taking ice time from who? Jesper Peterson? Phantoms are banged up so it's not an issue, but having a vet NHL caliber D also helps forwards develop |

I think there is room for legitimate criticism because Shcultz has not played as well as he did overall last year. I'm just saying that the results when Schultz is on the ice, aren't just on Schultz. As an example last game, Schultz was on the ice with the Laughton line for a considerable amount of time, and that line had an awful game.

They're not going to be banged up forever. I want the young players not only getting ice time, I want them getting some key ice time in a game. It is definitely an issue to consider. The AHL should be a developmental league, not a place to store veterans. You need some veteran presence, but they already had that before MacDonald was sent down. |

Personally I think everyone had an awful game. Simmonds, Giroux and Voracek need to seriously step up or we wont be winning much more games. |

If MacDonald wasn't sent down it would be Manning as the veteran on the first pairing with Ghost. |

Stolarz is off to a really nice start with the Phantoms. Developing a goalie has pretty much been as big a problem for the Flyers as the blueline. |

Also nice that Cousins and Leier are the points leaders. Cousins 2nd goal last night was an unstoppable wrister. |

I think you should substantiate your argument if you want to say that. They play in pairs so I don't think having him down there is taking away from their development. The flyers are aware that its a developmental league and I am sure that's the number 1 goal of the season for them. I dont think you can just throw all the young guys in the toughest situations and see if they sink or swim. It's hard for me to believe they don't have a plan in place for making sure the young guys are worked into situations they want them in
The other day there was an article (may have been friedman's 30 thoughts) that talked about Babcock not putting Reilly on the power play because he wanted him to think about the way he plays defense. I know he is the highest paid, but I would bet my life he isn't the only coach that does this. |

That was sexy....can we talk about how stupid it is to have a graphic of a whistle and the word goal cut into the highlights over actual replays? |

I think Brayden Schenn has stood out in most of the games he's played this season by not giving up on plays. Most notably his assist on the Laughton goal. He lost the puck and got it right back. He's willing to drive the net and doesn't seem to be forcing anything. He looks relaxed to me and playing a simple game. |

I'm not worried. It's still very early and I can see this team getting some chemistry. Mason has'nt hit mid season form yet either. |
