[quote=MJL]So Morin is a bad pick because he's not in the NHL yet. Morin was drafted in 2013. He spent last year back in Juniors, and is in the AHL this year. He may need a 2nd AHL season or partial season.
Not to compare Morin in any way.
PK Subban was drafted in 2007. He spent 2008 back in juniors, and spent 2009 in the AHL, before making the NHL full time in 2010.
Duncan Keith was drafted in 2002. He spent 02/03 back in Juniors, and then needed 2 AHL seasons before finally making the Hawks full time in 05.
Ryan Suter was drafted in 03. He spent 03/04 in college hockey, and 04/05 in the AHL, before making the NHL in 05/06.
I don't think he's a bust. It would be unfair to say that at this point. Really unfair to Morin who I think is a good, hard working kid. But, he was definitely a project. Maybe too big a project at number 11. Here's the issue - if you are picking number 11, do you want to take someone who is such a project? If someone told you right after they picked Morin, that in 2015, he still would not have played an NHL game, you would have been ok with that? I wouldn't have been. If you would have been ok with it, I guess we have a different way of looking at things. As far as your comparisons are concerned, Subban and Keith were both second round picks. Morin was picked at 11. Suter was a higher pick than Morin, but played college hockey and far fewer games than a Canadien junior player. Even taking that into account, he was in the NHL by his third year. Morin is in his third year after being drafted already and is in the AHL. - Bergey
I'm not a huge fan of the pick, but Morin has made a lot of strides. The Flyers, under Hextall, draft the guy they feel is the best player. Sanheim & Provorov were taken because they were the best guy available, not because Morin is a bust.
If they didn't have that second 1st rounder, maybe they trade down & grab a different player, but they have some really encouraging forwards in the pipe now. Konecny, Aube Kubel, Lindblom, Laughton, Cousins and even Cooper Marody, who is having a great freshman year at Michigan |

In my opinion, if Vinny is gonna put up any type of reasonable numbers, this is his best opportunity. If I'm being honest, I thought Vinny started off 14/15 well, got hurt and dropped off in his return. Showed some flash in about 4 games on the fourth line and jumped off a clip again, even though I felt that small bit of flash might have warranted a small leash with more talented players. I'm not expecting much but it is put up or shut up time. I didn't see Vinny getting much of the opportunity he's about to get but I do understand this very well could be his last real chance. - SuperSchennBros
But even if its his real last chance it is happening at the wrong moment.
The only team below Flyers on this road trip is Calgary.
It will be very difficult to beat the others Canucks,Oilers,Jet and even Avalanche on the first home game |

The reason why there was some angst over picking Morin was some (me included) thought he may be too one dimensional.
I am not going to label him a bust, but we shall see of course. |

I'm expecting this western Canadian trip to be struggle city for Flyers.
Low expectations and then hope to be pleasantly surprised.
Losing next 3 is more likely. |

Hopefully Conner was traveling and that's why Vinny was on third line duties at practice. I find it hard to believe a promotion is in order when he was given team low ice times in both games (by a very wide margin. 4-5 min), didnt even see PP2 time, and was stapled to the bench late in both games while down. Hakstol isn't blind -- he saw in both games the same player that was the 14th forward out of training camp and only because he couldn't go lower on the depth chart.
Right? Right....? *gulp* |

I would imagine Connor was called up strictly to have a spare player on a long road trip in case of injury |

Conner is just a 4th line fill in. That is better than Vinny. I could've seen him playing with 4th line again by necessity, but a promotion? Gagner Schenn Vinny -- the speed on that line wil be impressive. Gagner is playing very well. But all good things must come to an end. |

Yes, absolutely I would be okay with that. I'm aware that Subban and Keith were second round picks. The point is, that it is not uncommon for defenseman, some of the best in the league, to need developmental time. You draft a player hopefully for the long run, not for instant gratification. I think the concern is off base, and extremely premature. |

Yeah, not a fan of the pick either, but can't deny he's come a long way since draft day (but damn, does he still have a loooooong way to go). |

Martel has a point and assist tonight. That's 7 pts and hes not done playing his 5th game yet. I haven't watched any LHV but I would think his speed and playmaking on the LW would be worth a welcomed look soon. |

If Morin turns out to be a shut down physical monster on the back end, with good mobility, that will make a great mix with the skilled young defenseman they drafted later. In a perfect world of course, not all players make it or reach their potential.

He was a brilliant sign. Dinged for his stature, not his production. Kid has serious wheels, and not the Lecavalier brand. Here's hoping Hexy found a top 6 undrafted gem. |

Though I doubt it, he may, with good linemates and a couple days between games, manage to pull off a somewhat decent game tomorrow. However, it is extremely unlikely that he will be able to sustain it. He just looks like a guy who, after nearly 20 years of pro hockey, just can't hack it physically anymore.
I'm not angry at the guy, I just feel sorry for him. So often, the athlete is the last one to realize that he just can't cut it anymore. I will never forget how sad it was watching Steve Carlton pitch at the end. Here was a once dominant, sure fire 1st ballot hall of famer, out there throwing pitches that would barely qualify for batting practice.
Hopefully, by the end of the season, Vinny will realize that the time has come to hang up the blades and move on to the next chapter of his life. |
