that they haven't extended him yet makes me think the Flyers feel this way also

they usually sign the guys they want to keep early on

I'm tried of the media replaying the McDavid injury over and over. We get it he's a wussy that can't take a hit.

Too bad his value isn't as high as it once was.

Yeah... he'd have outscored Gretzky in the 80's with the way defenses were backing in and goalies were flopping around.

He'd have the size and balance to withstand all the 90's punishment too, I'd wager.

Dunno why he's not more appreciated today... these same people who hate on him now will be waxing poetic about his greatness to their grand kids in 20-30 years time.... mark my words.

I have serious doubts that Ovechkin would've outscored Gretzky in the 80's. I don't think there is any basis for making that comment. Ovechkin is a very good player, and a phenomenal goal scorer, but there were plenty of the same playing in the 80's, and Gretzky outscored them all.

Gretzky is the greatest scorer that ever lived, bar none.

A player has to be willing to re-sign. I think when a player isn't signed, it just means they haven't agreed on a deal yet. Raffl is unsigned also.

Meaningless. Gretzky's records will likely never be surpassed, making him easily the best scorer of all time. Ovechkin wouldn't surpass him regardless of what era he was playing in.

What you're not considering is that is Gretzky's numbers over his entire career, which spanned 20 years. Oveckin's goals per game are what he has put up to this point, so you're assuming that Oveckin is not going to see any decline, and is going to maintain that pace, and we also don't know how long Ovechkin is going to play.

Ovechkin has played 770 games to this point. Tell me, what was Gretzky's goals per game average over a similar amount of games, in his absolute prime? Then, you'd be making a legitimate comparison to this point.

Ovechkin to this point has scored 481 goals in 770 NHL games.

In a similar amount of games, in Gretzky's first 10 seasons, spanning 774 games, Gretzky scored 680 goals. .878 goals per game.

It's not close. While it's true that they played in different era's in different levels of scoring, Gretzky is still the best scorer to ever player, and debatable that he was the best player ever, period. I don't think Ovechkin is going to reach that level.

I'll await your response

I'd wager a good % of the goals 99 scored in the 80's wouldn't even make it on net in today's game, much less beat today's goalies.

Not denying the guy was great -- but the era he played in was ridiculously friendly to goal-scoring. If Mario had played more of his games in the 80's, I don't think there would even be a debate on who the best ever was.

OV would have been as physically dominant as Mario... he would have looked like Eric Lindros out there.

Thats a ridiculous argument that you cannot support.they've played in different era's but Gretzky was a step above what O vechkin is today.

In the point-scoring dept, yes. In the goal-scoring dept, probably not.

When all is said and done, I believe OV's gonna be considered one of the best goal-scorers of all time... maybe the best if he keeps up this remarkable level of durability and consistency.

There is no debating it. The different era's don't explain the 200 goal difference.

I agree that Ovechkin will be considered one.of the best goal scorers of all time and will go on the HOF. He's not Gretzky.
Ovechkin's level of consistency and durability is labeled remarkable, while ignoring Gretzky's. He sustained his average of goals per game over 20 seasons.

Aren't we debating it right now? There's no right or wrong w/ these cross-era kind of discussions... since it's all hypothetical.

But honestly... tell me you don't watch some of those 70's/80's goal highlights and think to yourself that team defense and goaltending hasn't improved by leaps and bounds.

Two choices. Look at the facts or indulge in wild speculation. You made an awful comparison by posting the goals per game list. It was apples to oranges. Gretzky is the best scorer, goals and assists, that ever lived until proven otherwise

You know, I do enjoy talking to you... until you dig in on a particular point and flip that condescension switch on. Does everything on here always have to be so black/white, right/wrong, high-stakes? Can't we just shoot the poop and talk hockey w/o it having to get unpleasant?

Here's something to view in the mirror, that was the start of any unpleasantness, and condescension. I'd prefer keeping the conversation on point.

So I guess we'll just ignore the tone of the preceding post?

It was the truth, that list was meaningless, and I explained and pointed out why it was. There is nothing unpleasant or condescending about that.
