To me, the problem wasn't Brown, it was the extension given to him. He's not a $6M/year player.
- jmatchett383

Of course the problem is the extension. Brown would be a great 3rd liner making Trevor Lewis money. I wouldn't have a problem if that were the case at all!! Had he made that money, but for only 3 years, I would've been cool with that too...

Right. But he didn't get that extension until after the 2012 Cup run (actually, he made that during both runs). Up until that point, he was making $3.175M.

I'm not so sure the money would work for the Kings front office. Even though cap hit wise it does... On paper this trade looks great, to me. Question is how much does Staal want in FA? As a rental, I'll do this deal all day long. But that's just me

Kings still have a FA in their own that's commanding 10.5+ or so we think

Great post Jason. You have to love Brown's heart and work ethic but his contract does look rather heavy on the books...

Would take that all day. Even to just rent Staal for the year.

And that's just it. It would likely be as a rental. You get E.Staal to plug in as a C/LW somewhere to help with a playoff push, while gaining cap room for next season.

Canes add another draft pick and a big body player to play on a second/3rd line role that they desperately need. Cap room isn't really an issue for the Canes, but net drive is. Brown would be a big help, and leaves them a decent chance of resigning E.Staal in the offseason.

I think it makes a lot of sense for both teams.

I would be a lot more forgiving if he was,

playing a 200 foot game.
Staying on the right side of the puck.
HITTING ... like real hits (not stat sheet technicality hits).
If he was able to stick handle at speed anymore.
Stay on his feet when stopping (which this year isn't as bad).

One of 2 things needs to happen and neither are based on loyalty, him being the captain, or anything he had to do with the 2 cups.... It has everything to do with "what have you done for me lately?" and the monetary discrepancy of his cost to production. He either needs to go, or he needs to change his style of play back to aggressive and not be a puck carrier and become more of a front of the net presence.

I think the time to deal him is now, and we don't need much in return because IMO Mersche should be getting Brown's ice time and the team would be better off for it.

Congrats to Collin Miller on his first goal. He is exactly what we needed to replace Voynov and we traded him away for a guy that gets into a prime hitting situation where the hitter (Lucic) has the advantage and instead he is the one that is going down after throwing the hit.

Keep your rose tinted glasses on and feel free to shout me down, but our D is not that good and it is going to fail more than it succeeds this season. Bigger slower heavier is not the way to go anymore. You can play heavy and big and still be fast, it's the way of the future and we got DL and DS trying to suit up a team that is the equivalent of putting a stock pinto into the NASCAR field.

Right. And...? It's not even the money as much as it's the TERM. I've always doubted Browns ability because of what I've perceived as hands of granite and brains of oatmeal. But I had always respected that he left it all on the ice and was able to chip in here and there on the scoresheet. He was instrumental in 2012, not so much afterwards (and I really think the TDL rumors lit a hell of a fire under him to prove he was more than trade bait). The less time with the puck on his stick, the better off the Kings will be. I'm all for him making his money, I just wish it wasn't for the next 6 seasons. But it is and this is why I feel he needs to be moved. Maybe he can restructure his contract is he's that much of a "team" guy, although I think there's CBA rules against that. As he is not even hitting very much anymore, his 4-8 SOG a night are worthless and I'd rather see someone else getting his minutes.

Wasn't aware that dumping Regehr and Greene in favor of McBain/Forbort/Ehrhoff was getting slower and bigger.

In fact, I would only make that deal if it was guaranteed that Staal was a rental. But it would have to be straight up, no other players/picks.

Of course I'd make this trade on a pure rental level. Clears the Kings of 5.8m for the next what, 4 years.

Have to disagree with you on the D. I don't think they're slow at all and the stick work is really great! Not everyone can be Doughty.

I don't think they'd do it. If trading someone like Staal they'd need pieces for the future more than somebody who's the same age.

I know you're kidding, but the fact that he's not rotting in some jail cell is an ongoing problem with America's judicial system.
