Also, if you want to go deep in analyzing first rounders, Hockey DB is the place to do it:
Click on "Draft by year" and you'll instantly see which players have made the NHL and how many games they've played.
Click on "Draft by team" and you can get a very quick idea of a team's overall draft record. NHL games played is a great metric in my mind - they don't discriminate between whether the games are with the team that drafted the player, or someone else (see Grabner, Michael)

... it's still bad.
Horvat was 1 of two top 10 picks that turned out to know how to play hockey. Thats horrible. Hodgson is almost like drafting Wellwood in the 1st round... except Wellwood is a better defensive player.
Gaunce is a #1 pick and he's still fighting to get into the league and as welcoming as I am for him... he had to go through a lot of changes to become something we can use... a salvaged 1st rounder at best. A project player that seem to be plenty.
Jensen... another 1st rounder. He is a long shot to make the NHL after all these years of development.
Shcroeder...BUST
Shink is coming around finally. The jury is far from decided on him. Same draft as Horvat... This is the only 1st round in Gillis' entire stay here that can be considered a success. The season in which piece by piece, Gillis was losing managing control of the team I may add.
If you cant get top 23 roster spot players out of half of your 1st rounders... you are a complete fail.
So far it's one very promising player out of the 1st round for Gillis and a couple of depth players in the AHL.

Bloated was singing the same tune about what Benning has done as well... he doesnt seem interested in being around like he was before the season started. In fact, he says he didnt even watch recent Canucks games because the east is more entertaining.
So what I don't understand about these guys is,,, they should be happy things are not starting off as bad as they feared... I know it's a long season but isnt there relief? Are they not excited about how young we have become while staying competitive? If you are a Canuck fan,,, and even if there are more elite teams to watch... is this not what we have been begging for? Why would it be so painful to embrace it... even if like anywhere else in the league... it has the potential to go south at some point....
Just come back to the forum and enjoy whats happening. If you cant do that... you most likely are sulking and hoping you prove us wrong. To me that is like cheering against the Canucks to save face. - boonerbuck

Tonight's Tarasenko's first game back. Jagr's on his way back from his injury too.
Tavares still sidelined with mysterious illness. Mumps 2.0?? - Carol Schram

Honestly this is the best post I have seen in awhile.
I have to eat crow as well as I came in these threads after the Torts year angry and looking for validation. Looking for the team to not make the playoffs and negativity. After awhile you just want the team to do well. The kids have turned my opinions around and it started with Horvat last year. Once you have the ability to see what is possible moving forward...the past just doesn't matter.
Sure I will always carry '94 and 2011 SCF around with me...that is natural to being a Canuck fan but now I see some great things coming moving ahead...and it just bucks the negativity. |

He'll even I thought WD was a good hire. I'll admit I was wrong - Bieksa#3
Time will tell. He's already better with prospects than AV ever was. Seeing as we are transitioning to a younger team... I think it's a good signing.
I have very little faith in WD's playoff abilities today on the other hand. He has to show he is less timid next time for me to start gaining confidence in him he post season. In his defense again... just look at what AV was famous for in the playoffs for a number of years... not adjusting his lines... hanging back in a lead and letting a series slip away... really poor starting goalie choices... not letting players retaliate when the whistles were put away.... today... AV is considered a playoff coach but his bad habits were with him when he was a head coach for almost a decade. WD has had one shot in his rookie season. It's way too early to say he won't figure it out.
I really don't know where this team was going to look for both developing and playoff success at the same time in a hiring. Where was the good hiring? Who was the coach that you rebuild with and win in the playoffs with at the same time? Was there one?

Can't tell if your being sarcastic. Vey got a free pass because he was willies boy from Jr. ....and for the entire season. These guys get bench for one mistake. If anything this makes WD look like more of a dipstick |

I wasnt being sarcastic. Where's Willie's Vey now? AHL. Our past conversation you were talking about WD giving players like him too much leash last season. This season... Sven is getting scratched... The point that slipped by you is that there are changes in how WD does things if you are willing off take off the blinders.
Lets not forget that Vey did have his moments last season with the Sedin's and on the PP. The coach had less choices last season as well. Now look how much they have in the middle now...
This business about whats is inside Willie's head is just pure biased speculation on your part.

I'm sure he is. Toronto has to give him the ingredients. The Canucks have some excellent vets and quality prospects in the line up. Toronto doesnt have the same balance in the line up.
I would love to have him as our coach. He was not available though.

OK, I have to clear more stuff up that you inserted in my posts.
I never claimed Shink was going to be at best a depth player. I separated him from the group because he is coming around and l pointed that out. You made that up.
Jensen is trending so far down the depth chart... he is looking like depth at the best right now...so yes I do think that about him. He will be heading Europe soon though. Gaunce is looking bottom six... we are waiting. He will be NHL I think but will he be more than just 4rth liner? We will see. I won't give him a low ceiling but like I said... look how much work went into making him usable... not typically the kind of project you want to make with a 1st round pick.
I consider depth players to be in the top 23...but low in the top 23. You assumed wrong.
In 6 seasons... Gillis had two top 10 picks and a season where he picked 2 players in the first round. Just remember that when we are trying our hardest to see more than Horvat.
I wish you could just address what in people's posts instead of putting so much work into rewriting it. Fosco?
- boonerbuck
Let's try this again.
How many players need to make the NHL as a regular out of those drafts for you to think that it was a success?

Babcock will last maybe 2 or 3 seasons before they fire him. That team is going nowhere fast and it's exposing Babcock as a coach who lucked into having one of the top 3 D-men of all-time for so many years and two elite centers who could score at will. How he's doing in Toronto is how I expected him to go, up a creek, no paddle and no map or compass to guide him. |
