I honestly think NHLPA is a huge brotherhood that looks out for their fellow players. Have you ever noticed that in the contract year every player plays better. If giving Wiese 15 goals this year is going to get him paid and in turn drive the players share up then why wouldn't some goalies let in some suspect goals in mean nothing games. The same player would try the same thing in the non contract year and it is a save.
It might be a little too late in the week for a Tuesday post but it is something to think about.
I don't think that the players play that much harder in the contract year but their numbers are through the roof.

That aint a Tuesday post at all.

There is merit to what you are saying.

Remember when Theoren Fluery years ago wanted to stay in Calgary for way less money? I have it on good authority the the NHPLA told him he would be blacklisted if he didn't leave Calgary for more cash to bump the salaries up. It happens more than people think.

Some of this makes sense for back in the day sort of unwritten rules stuff, but today? Maybe feeding a guy the puck to get going, keep streaks alive, hat trick on the night or something, but beyond that I can't see it.

I can't see a goalie willing to let in a soft one to help an opposing player in their contract year make more money. unless there was a bonus on the line at the end of a season and the guy needed to score and didn't really impact the opposing teams playoff hopes or goalie bonuses...

games nowadays and competition is so tight. one weak goal can turn a game around.

It seems a bit prophetic that next Tuesday, the Canucks will be visiting...Columbus. Let the fun begin!

Here's the new blog, with the scene-set for tomorrow morning's game against Buffalo:

Have you noticed that the hot streak is never late in the season? It is always in the first 1/4 of the season. If a player like Weise (perennial 4th liner) gets 2.5-3.5 mils per season for long term that means the average salary goes up. Everyone makes more money.

Without the salary cap, I can understand this to some extent, with the salary cap it shouldn't be a factor, more players making less money, less making more and whatever is in the middle.

With the Canucks, we see Dorsett, Prust as 4th liners making too much money, and it is making ripples in the lineup. Rookies at bargain prices helps make the salaries work and there is a market adjustment at some point when teams will look at overpaid 4th liners and decide to run more with youth and cap space...

With the salary cap, I don't see this sort of stuff as benefiting players on the whole.

With the hot streaks early in the season, I see it more that some players hit the ground running and others are out of sync. I don't think anyone did the Sedins and Vrbata any favours when they were hot to start last season.
