From the Hotstove:
I expected the Sabres to be better with Jack Eichel, Ryan O'Reilly and co. in the fold but I did not expect them to go from the worst possession team the NHL has seen in the analytics era to a top-10 team (they currently rank 6th) in that regard.
Having better players definitely helps, but that kind of marked improvement has a lot to do with coaching. We're already starting to see how behind the 8-ball they really were.

Looking back, it is amazing how many thought the team would play well with only the work hard plan of attack.
As amazing as it is to say, Hasek was even better then we all thought.
I am enjoying all the talk of making the nets larger, but there is a simpler solution.
Call all penalties again and eliminate obstruction. That combined with reducing the size of the goalie pads would do the trick. - kingcong39
The problem with doing that is the main purpose of the pads is to protect the goalie. I know the guys years ago used to wear smaller pads, but with all the safety issues brought to light all the time these days, I don't see them doing too much to make the pads smaller.

They really do need to start calling everything. Teams will realize they can't play the clutch and grab style anymore and that will open up a lot of space for the skilled guys. The problem is the NHL doesn't think the low scoring is an issue. They seem to not care about fixing it

when you upgrade the top 6, it does so much for the roster
