Does that look like a lineup that needs Staal? Hardly. The problem with this team right now is the blueline. Defensively they're getting by (albeit with amazing goaltending), but in terms of moving the puck they're a disaster.

if anything, they'll be trading a forward for a defenseman. Cole is not a top pairing guy and needs to be pushed down. Lovejoy was forced into a role he shouldn't have played last year too. This year Lovejoy has been much more effective in his role.

If Pittsburgh can acquire a true top 4 dman and promotes Pouliot, they'll start scoring again. Hearing that they're interested in Staal is hilarious beyond belief.

He's probably a serviceable #4-5 guy on most teams, yeah. He's still pretty fast out there, though I don't think he reads plays in his own zone as well as he used to.

Could see Eric Staal moving at the deadline as a rental only pickup.If Canes are not going to sign him or Ward they will need to spend to get to the cap floor .they could take on some salary in the trade .(for example )Eric to Tampa for a 1st and a 2nd a prospect and Filippula (5m x 3 yrs). Tampa goes for it this year but also moves a big contract in the process .gives them a better chance keeping all their cores guys going forward if they move Carle as well . Canes can than sign Eric back in the offseason

Pour me one of those you're having.....even if you knew what you were talking about, that kind of deal does essentially nothing to address the Pens' cap issue. Now you somehow force Carolina to take Scuderi and Kunitz in that deal, then maybe something happens. Still, I don't know why the Penguins would want Staal so badly.

Honestly, I could see GMJR offering Pouliot.....under the assumption something has officially come to light (and I don't necessarily mean his public intoxication charge) they didn't see before camp.....but I'd be shocked even beyond the level of the Despres deal if he moved Sprong.

Not really; they didn't have that much farm before the Kessel deal. Yes, they dealt their #1 from last season; and while I never got the impression anyone thought the Kapanen kid was a bad pick, I also don't think anyone viewed the kid as any kind of can't miss prospect.

My source was Eklund and it is an E5. I would be surprised if this doesn't get done sometime today.
