Could see Eric Staal moving at the deadline as a rental only pickup. If Canes are not going to sign him or Ward they will need to spend to get to the cap floor .they could take on some salary in the trade .(for example )Eric to Tampa for a 1st and a 2nd a prospect and Filippula (5m x 3 yrs). Tampa goes for it this year but also moves a big contract in the process .gives them a better chance keeping all their cores guys going forward if they move Carle as well . Canes can than sign Eric back in the offseason

ya..but In this scenario, then on July 01, he will sign somewhere else...

WHY would the Penguins want a guy, with that salary, and not producing much ?

Because he's on a 55-ish point pace and would be a rental, meaning only a small portion of that salary would count against the cap?

He also has 6 points in his last 6 games... He's beginning to heat up.

Here's the story with the Penguins: petulant, player-run team. Culture of being simple to break and fall easily to the most elementary systems. Poor at defending, cycling, and passing. They're still playing free-for-all, junior style hockey in a speed-first, modernized league.

The result is that, after the 09 Championship, the Penguins have won 4 (four) playoff series - 2 against Ottawa and 2 very suspicious wins against Columbus and the Islanders- and two of those series were backstopped by Tomas Vokoun.

The core of the team has not developed at all in six seasons; adding more aged star players will not help this situation. Adding Phil Kessel to Pittsburgh amounted to what? A seven or eight game failed experiment with 87? Crosby cannot play with Phil Kessel nor Iginla? Is Crosby the sword in the stone? That can only be pulled from the stone by Pascal Dupuis, the rightful king of the Britons?

Wishful thinking here. The Pens don't have enough assets to land E Staal. CAR will want a rostered, point producing center, a #1 pick and probably an up and coming young D-man on a ELC.

I'd look to Tampa, Montreal and St Louis or San Jose first.

...What the hell would the Canes want with ANOTHER young defenseman? Nope.

Why...why not ?? Competitive teams usually stockpile their D prospects and have good depth in that position. Besides Hanifin and Fleury, do you really think the Canes' are that deep in D prospects ?? I surely do not. My hunch is Murphy will not stick, and your not going to tell me that RF won't not take another blue chip D prospect in a E Staal trade if available to make the team better.

Of course, it won't be the centerpiece of the trade, but a likely part, YES.

You don't think Murphy will stick? Murphy has been one of our better defensemen this year. Pesce has not looked out of place at all. Mckeown and Fleuiry are both lighting it up in Junior and Jaccob Slavin is crushing the AHL right now.

The cupboard is full there. If anything, I'd be trading one or two away for forward help.

Or maybe they could land Cam Fowler or Bruce Boudreau. Maybe even Dion Phaneuf.

To Canes fans who think the cost for renting 31 yr old pending UFA Eric Staal coming off 2 consecutive injury-reduced seasons with substantially diminishing production is a 1st+roster player + elite prospect........

for BINGO^^

You will never get that much for a rental of Eric Staal. 1st rounder and a prospect should do it.

Murphy has been decent, but I just don't think he is the type of D that BP and RF want to build on. RF wants to build a bigger team that's hard play against and competes every night. Murphy's size is a concern and I don't see him ever being a shut down guy. He may be a 5-6 on a few teams. Cupboard is never full enough, as you stated, they can be used as trading chips if their development lingers. As much as I like Pesce too, its gonna be hard to play as well as he has consistently.

Ah. Yeah... I don't know. I think they'll get more than he's probably worth. Francis got a 1st and a prospect for Andrej Sekera, so you never know.

That's what the Canes' will want, not saying their get it, of course. I can see it happening though if the other team immediately signs Eric to a contract extension or a new deal. I still think a rostered NHLer will be part of the deal, we can only wait and see what transpires.

So, Pittsburgh has top centers Sidney Crosby and Evgeny Malkin, traded Jordan Staal because they couldnt Afford him, and Now you say that want his brother Eric and his huge contract?? PS Pittsburgh is one puck moving, offensive defenseman and one stay at home hard hitting defender away from challenging for the Cup!!

They're a new coach away from challenging. The blue line isn't what's suffocating Crosby and others. They're going to get rolled over by almost anyone in a 7 game series if they're playing Mike Johnston hockey.
