I think Nolan was just THAT clueless.. And I actually bought into the hype when they had a real nice 10 game stretch last year.
Gee, maybe there's a reason he's been out of work so many years. - Pairo11
There was a time when Nolan's coaching style worked. That was almost 20 years ago. The game has evolved, and Nolan didn't evolve with it. He also has a history of being an obstructionist, which doesn't help his cause. |

I think the bigger change is that they aren't chipping the puck out at all. Instead, they are making creative little passes all over the ice and then busting arse up ice once they get into the clear. This is also why I didn't put too much stock into how people performed last year - the ice was constantly tilted toward our end and even good players can be made to look bad. - Slump Buster
When Murray was on WGR last week he said specifically they targeted players that were good at puck possession and a coach that preached that system as well. His whole intent in putting this team together was a team that would drive possession throughout the game. He wanted nothing to do with putting together a "dump and chase" type of game. |

Remember when the sky fell after Mike Babcock decided to go to Toronto and we had to settle for Bylsma.
This system he has in place - a single aggressive and relentless forechecker, paired with second guy ALWAYS positioned somehow in the passing lane at the blue line, and great d-zone outlets - is working incredibly well with the talent and skill set possessed by this roster.
As they get more experience, familiarity and comfort with the way it works, if the Sabres can get healthy, and stay healthy, they are going to surprise many more teams than just the Lightening. - Der Kaiser
I think so too. Although, I did say all along, that if the Babcock thing fell through, it was almost imperative that they get Bylsma, and obviously they did. |

if we had trevor kidd in net instead of dom, IMO the sabres are a lottery team during Nolan's glory years |

I agree, but his system is heavily reliant on the goaltender. It worked in the dead puck era. It doesn't work anymore. |

Let's not kid ourselves here. we are in it. And for a while their it was working to our goaltenders advantage last year (see Lindback making every sabres fan poop themselves 1 week before the lottery). |

What happened to Martin St Louis Brad Richards Chris drury. Wade Redden Marian Gaborik next is who oh that's right Rick Nash every time a star player gets traded to the Rangers or they sign a player their career basically over |

It's amazing what you can accomplish with talent and better coaching. - buffalofan19
Bylsma has definitely changed his style from when he was with the Pens.
You don't see forwards standing still at the blue line like he was criticized for at the latter part of his tenure.
Also, I think the one thing this team still lacks is top end speed.
Having slow to average skaters in Moulson, Reinhart, O'Reilly In the top 6 prevents this team from scoring a lot more than they have |

Brad Richards won a Stanley Cup last year. If his career was over after he went to NY, how is it that Chicago felt he was a piece that could help them get to the Cup?
Gaborik has also won a Cup since he's been in NY.
Facts kid....look 'em up. |

On the poker thing, I've argued for years that what most now call "poker" is the (my opinion) same old boring game every round in which you make a hand out of 8 cards...lots of skill but even more luck needed to win. Wear the sunglasses and pump your fist when you win. yay.
Real poker is dealer's choice: games like 5-card stud, draw poker, acey/deucy, baseball, night baseball, follow the whore, monty little "L", etc. A different game every time and way more skill needed than the Texas stuff. |
