I say giving a 7-8 year deal for almost anyone (not a FA) is really tough to do.

What is the last contract you know of that was 7 or more years and worked out well, even the last year (was ok performance for the money)? I can't think of any 8 year deal that I would have been happy with, I mean most are yet to be known (the final year(s) of the contract).

Look at the Blackhawks, they could have done that for a few players, but then they would not be able to sign their top end talent, so they trade away 2-3 line players to keep the top line guys. It is hard to pay a contract for loyalty and still expect to sign top end talent.

Detroit does't have the need to resign their potential superstars for 3+yrs as their current superstars are already signed and are aging.
