If Golisano didn't step in and buy the Sabres, yes, it was a very real threat.

Was he always concerned about the bottom line? Yes. But it was because he needed the franchise to be a viable business. He knew 0 about hockey when he bought the team. But he did it as a stopgap until the appropriate owner could be found (Enter Terry Pegula).

I heard that he had multiple offers throughout the years to sell the team, but each one meant the team would be moved and he said no every time.

Their D was plenty good enough before the injuries. With the way the game was being called a shot blocker and someone who could get the puck out of the zone was all they needed.
