Elliotte Friedman was on Calgary’s Sportsnet 960 on Friday morning.

On Ron Hextall’s patience:

“I think he’d love to do something. I really do. But I think he’d love to do something for awhile. He’s had Brayden Schenn out there. He’s had Luke Schenn out there. Obviously he’s had Lecavalier out there. There’s no biting on this. From what I’m told, unless something happened in the last couple of days, he’s had no serious interest in Lecavalier in a long time. That’s a really tough one.

“They had a columnist this morning write that they should consider thinking about trading Giroux. I’m against that. You just cannot replace that guy. You lose him, and I mean – unless the offer is out-of-this-world unbelievable, you’re giving up the best player in a trade and a guy who has a lot of good years left ahead of him.

“I just think Ron Hextall was left a mess. He really was. He inherited a situation that had a lot of problems. A lot of bad contracts. The smartest thing they can do is just battle their way through it.

In terms of bad contracts, and what Hextall was left with, there is Lecavalier, and the issue of MacDonald. Umberger was acquired by Hextall. Right now, those are the only 3 bad contracts the Flyers have. In my opinion, Umberger and Lecavalier are gone after next season. Umberger's deal expires, and Lecavalier will retire, if not sooner. That leaves MacDonald to deal with moving forward.

The Flyers issues, far more than cap and bad contracts, is player mix, and the gap between the current forward corp, and the developing defenseman. Those are far bigger issues than contracts and the cap.

i agree use the pieces you have within to help you thru this unless you are going to pick up salary in trades you are not moving guys and in all truth i am not opposed to bringing luke schenn bake next year but at about 1/2 the cost he does have some upside to his game

How much salary are you guys willing to eat, in order to get Vinny out?

Sending Umberger down to bring up Cousins is interesting, is it possible?

The time is now for real change. The idea of a panic move or desperate move is nonexistent. You don't move the prospect. You identify the core. You move everything else.

Do you think the time is now to maximize the return for assets that you might want to move?

Travis Sanheim's D partner in Calgary and likely first round pick next year.

I'd be willing to eat a lot of Vinny's money. I think they're facing a buyout, and eating 50% in a trade is cheaper and shorter term.

Right now is not the time for real change. The Flyers are viewed as being desperate, which means low offers and teams offering their own flawed or under productive guys

i would eat 2mil of vinny salary to get him out at 2.5 mil he should be easier to move and gives us 2.5 mil more in salary cap it win win for both parties we get rid of him he gets to prove he is useless somewhere else

But you wait until the deadline and the offseason when you are dealing from a little more position of strength. Trying to trade anyone now would be like getting bent over the railing and taking it backdoor jail style.

16 goals in 30 games pathetic
Voracek 0 goals in 16 games pathetic
non competitive listless hockey pathetic
inept management pathetic
a non qualified coach in over his head pathetic
no cups in 40 years pathetic

All that being said, the future is bright! 4 future Norris Trophy winners are on the way. Patience everyone.

I thought you were giving one of the Flyers current prospects a nickname!

Doubtful that Sanheim is in the NHL next season.

The other thing is, if Friedman is right, Hextall has had the Schenns on the block and found no takers. I get Vinny being poison on the trade market, but if he can't get a sniff on either Schenn?

There is no way, I would accept a trade with retained salary for Lecavalier this season. Maybe in the off season. A buyout this off season, would also be out of the question in my opinion. I think it would be foolish.

I think Freidman's words have to be taken with a grain of salt. He may know that there have been talks about players between teams, but I doubt he knows the specifics and what has been offered. Hextall very well could've been made offers for players, but not offers he is willing to accept.

it is a sunk cost...why not retain salary? your stuck with his cap hit whether you eat salary or not....remove say 2mm of his salary going forward by retainment and you can actually get a legit nhl player to replace him.

n one is trading for him anyway.

My approach right now, would be to play Lecavalier only when I had to, and then re-visit the potential of a retained salary transaction in the off season, if it is offered.

I'm not sure I can believe that. But maybe because they think both of them, being pending free agents, can be had cheaper on the open market rather than trading assets?

I don't know....

I imagine there have been offers for the Schenns, just not ones Hextall likes. Most of the league is lacking in wiggle room anyways, so I doubt we'd see Luke moved until close to the deadline.

Might be because Hextall is asking more than teams want to pay right now. I'd think both would have some degree of value.
