well he was also left with Hartnell and Pronger (obviously Pronger was an unfortunate contract issue due to injury). So yes, Hextall brought in Umberger but Hartnell was on Holmgren.

nothing wrong with hartnells contract. he is paid accordingly.

It's a ballpark figure. It also depends on when he is traded, that number is for when I expect Schenn traded, which is around the deadline.

What do you think B Schenn + L Schenn with retained salary could fetch us?

That's very hard to say, honestly. I think Luke Schenn alone could get you a decent pick or prospect, ( not a first round pick). B Schenn probably has more value than his brother.

I'm curious to see come the deadline if Hexy does package the two. As of now it's a lot clearer that Luke should/will be traded but B Schenn still has time to show he deserves a spot with us and our future plans. How many more days until the deadline?

The thing is that Luke Schenn is on an expiring contract and will be a UFA. If you package his brother with him, that limits the number of teams involved in the bidding.

Very true. We prob are best suited to trade them separately if we decide to move both

Made it through the backroad....interesting stuff

The biggest one I liked is seeing if Nick Cousins could create offense. I always believed in Bob Clarke's theory in that just because you are on the NHL roster doesn't mean you get to stay, and that sometimes the guy next to you is the one who is going to take your spot

Don't know if Cousins is ready now, or could be later this year. But maybe he has the type of skillset that helps guys score

Like Giroux, think Laughton is developing nicely, not too worried about Couturier. Voracek is frustrating but sometimes guys do this in the first year of extensions. We have all seen this before, for the old guys who watch

But if it was me, I just think there is some staleness in this roster. I don't know who can get moved and I am not ripping anyone. I just think there is some staleness there

I'd assume Schenn is going to command equal amount in terms of cap such as Couts but don't think we'll offer that much of term compared to couts

Well when you have almost the same group of forwards for 3+ seasons and they are worsening, then id say staleness is a fairly accurate word to use to describe us

And part of the rationale for Hartnell trade was due to the two extra seasons on Hartsy's deal. So while Umberger is definitely Hextall's move, it was to gain flexibility that didn't exist with the deal Holmgren gave Hartnell.

Even if the bad deals are limited to Lecavalier & MacDonald, that's still $8.1mm in cap space this season that the Flyers effectively lost.

Hartnell is still an effective scoring line player.
- MJL

yes obviously as far as talent goes, it was a downgrade, however I do think getting out of that long term deal wasn't a bad thing at all.

Flyers have about 670K in cap space, and Schenn is on an expiring contract. How much money can they eat, to sweeten the deal?
- MJL

They can eat half his salary

There is no way, I would accept a trade with retained salary for Lecavalier this season. Maybe in the off season. A buyout this off season, would also be out of the question in my opinion. I think it would be foolish.
- MJL

Why would you wait until the offseason to make a retained salary trade?

If vinny gets moved. It's going to be in a package deal with another player that the flyers identify is not a fit going forward. It will look something like the grossman trade.

I could see Simmonds + lecavalier with retained salary going to Colorado for a return along the lines of comeau (or a player they identify as more of a fit for Hak), a 2nd, B level prospect

Something like that. Where they believe their getting a veteran player who is more of a fit for the aggressive forecheck Hak employs, a nice draft piece, and a mid tier piece

When they identify the pieces they don't believe are a fit, I'm hoping there is not much hesitation to pull the trade trigger. You almost have to get out in front of other teams before the deadline because everyone is so close to the cap, you don't want to be left without any dance partners

I think ppl forget a lot of the bad penalties Hartnell took. Often times in the offensive zone. He also took them at bad times in the game. I really was ready to move on from Hartsy. His novelty effect on fans seems to have left ppl upset.

We are much better off with out him. Could we win a couple more games with him? Sure. But we'd have picked 12th last year rather than 8th. Is The Hartnell trade keeping us out of the playoffs? I certainly don't think so. I'll take the lesser player and more cap friendly contract.

Vinny will not be traded for anyone who is useful in any way compared to the money that is being paid to them. I personally only see him being useful to a team who values his cap hit for budgetary reasons. It is really a shame we didnt retain salary to OTT or NSH when we supposedly had the chance.

I know. Hence if he ever goes it would need to be a package deal. Nobody is going to play him, but maybe they can pickup Simmonds for a discount while unloading a pieces that make sense for us

I agree, which is why I'm not worried about the Umberger contract. The Flyers are not a contender this season, and won't be next season. Ride out the final year of Umberger's deal next season, and be done with it. The final outcome of the deal can't be determined until we see what Hextall does with the cap space.
