Why would you wait until the offseason to make a retained salary trade? - YuenglingJagr
To wait and see what Lecavalier does after another failed season of poor play, and being a healthy scratch for most of the season.

I agree, which is why I'm not worried about the Umberger contract. The Flyers are not a contender this season, and won't be next season. Ride out the final year of Umberger's deal next season, and be done with it. The final outcome of the deal can't be determined until we see what Hextall does with the cap space. - MJL
Well if Hartnell currently holds actual trade value in the market its technically a loss for us and a bad trade. But I'd assume that with his contract that he only holds value if the Jackets would take a decent sized cap hit in return(likely a multi-year commitment as well). |

When they identify the pieces they don't believe are a fit, I'm hoping there is not much hesitation to pull the trade trigger. You almost have to get out in front of other teams before the deadline because everyone is so close to the cap, you don't want to be left without any dance partners - Just5
Waiting for closer to to the deadline, gives other teams more cap space to work with, not less. More teams will be available to trade with then, than there is now. |

What Columbus does or doesn't do, with Hartnell isn't a factor in how good of trade it was for the Flyers in my opinion. Flyers have no control over that. |

that's BS. then final outcome for most trades cant be determined, at least the ones that still have lineage to it.
hextall got robbed on his first big trade. hartnell is a legit scoring winger. I pray he gets traded at some point just to see the return. hextall should have waited before he moved him. umberger had 3 years lef ton his deal when acquired. well that was hextalls window to move him. 3 years. saint Ronnie, always the forward thinker. |

If Hartnell actually holds legit trade value then it does matter. I doubt he'd struggle to produce had he rode shotgun with Giroux/Voracek last year.
We can only speculate and like I said, I'd still bet that his actual trade value isn't much due to the contract length/age/cap hit. |

I feel like he should have been moved a year or two earlier when he was considered to have more upside. |

What happens with Hartnell in any separate deal Columus may make involving Hartnell has no bearing on how the deal Hextall made turns out. They only thing left there is how Hextall uses the cap space gained, by Umberger's deal ending sooner, which was a big reason for making the deal.

I think Simmonds fits on the roster. I think it's the pieces around him that don't fit. Every team needs a power forward that can score.

hextall liked umberger the player, lets not forget that. though many do. the deal hextall made is terrible.
you don't trade top line wingers for borderline bottom line wingers. one that was going to be bought out by the way. great trade. yeah we saved future cap money, yippee. |

So, lets say Flyers pick # 2 (would be thrilled but fear the worst). Anyway, Matthews is gone.
Do they pass on Chychrun and abandon BPA approach? I know little beyond what I have read and what I have read is about the kid being compared favorably to Ekblad and Doughty at similar stages. Apparently, a franchise type 1D. And exceptionally strong. Provorov and Sanheim are good but not projected to be franchise Ds now, unless I am mistaken.

So the roster doesn't fit Simmonds?
Which is the easier way to fix things is I guess how I look at it.
They would basically need to bring in anew Center because Simmonds as you say isn't surrounded with the right guys. |

Always go BPA and worry about have a surplus or weakness later. It's not it's hard to trade good young players in the NHL, especially dmen. |

Is he ready to go right to the NHL? They can't afford to take another 3 year D project in the first round. |

The Flyers need to add more speed and skill and offensive catalysts to the roster. They have too many players that can't create for themselves. Simmonds is one of those players. He has been a good goal scorer and player on this team. Play him with the right players, that he can form chemistry with, and he's a 30 goal, 60 point forward.
