well thats a no brainer, no one today is worth a 1st overall pick (to be fair McDavid and Eichel are worth more lol . If a team who are not at the least a playoff bubble team should not be trading their 1st overall pick unless its protected, especially with he new lottery rules.
Getting a Top 5 pick is worth so much more than it did compared to 10 years ago. Prospects are better and more NHL ready plus in a cap era, getting a prime ELC talent makes or breaks a franchise if they are rounding into contention

I completely agree the leafs should not be entertaining the idea of trading for Duchene. they don't have the prospect depth or a competitive nhl team.
I was trying to benchmark value. a guaranteed first overall is one thing. a first round draft pick that has over 80% chance of not being 1st overall is not good value for Duchene imo.
that and Edmonton always gets the 1st.
